My parents get really excited when they run into someone (in stores, mostly) who speaks their Indian language -- not that they don't know people who do, but it is exciting for them to find out that a stranger does. I think something similar applies for seeing one's native language written on a chalkboard when one is immersed in place where it is not spoken/written.
