The Last Kiss

VERY Dissappointing...I think I've put ZB on a movie-making pedestal. So I went in with high hopes. I received an unbelievably infuriating tale of a character that was just a complete moron. Forced to make an obvious choice between greatness and mediocrity, and he obviously falters on his journey to figure it out. And of course the chick from the O ( Read more... )

The soundtrack for the movie pissed me off because it was a blatant copy of Garden State. I hated all of the characters too.

Everyone I went with was complaining that a 28-year-old guy would not jeopardize his stable, adult relationship for a ditzy immature college chick, but I think those people missed the point. He felt like his life was TOO stable and adult, so he was tempted by the prospect of getting back a little spontaneity and youthful excitement. Even if, on paper, anybody would say it was a terrible idea, life isn't lived out on paper, and feeling bored with your life can be scary enough to make you do dumb things. Maybe it's because I can identify with him a little, because sometimes my life feels like it's too "old" for me, but I thought Last Kiss was pretty good.

LOL. No, I totally agree as to understanding WHY he would be tempted by the college chick and all. That made sense to me. I just had a hard time liking it because I hated almost all of the character's decisions in the end.

As Adam pointed out later, "I kissed her, my gf hates me ... what to do? what to do? WAIT! I know! Let's go SLEEP with the college chick!"
.... I mean, that's just DUMB. I can understand that he was feeling lost and confused and maybe he could still salvage that one relationship, but that doesn't excuse it being a stupid decision.

Actually, going back wasn't a terrible move, according to the double transgression theory, which states: if you've already done something of magniture X to piss of your significant other, you might as well do something else of magniture Y to piss them off even more, because the total magnitude will be close to the greater of X and Y. In other words, once they're mad at you for one thing, you've got less to lose by doing something else!

While I have never seen Curb Your Enthusiasm, I think that this double transgression theory fails to take into account that since X and Y are not equal, one of those might be at such a high level that it is unrecoverable.

Especially since they're labeled as different -- dog pees on rug, then dog steals food off table -- I can see where double transgression could come into play without fear of actually HITTING that breaking point, because they are anger aimed at one person, but for different things.

Whereas in 'The Last Kiss,' however, I think we can safely say that X and Y are equal: she's mad that he cheated on her, regardless of HOW he cheated on her. So REPEATING the action, having 2 X's, seems more likely to hit that breaking point than to be able to 'get away with it' because she's already angry.

I am enjoying discussing the metaphysical motivations of fictional characters. ^_^

I didn't hate the movie. I actually enjoyed it more than I enjoyed Garden State. But I did hate every single female character. HATED them. "How could you kiss another girl I'm going to do a complete personality 180 and threaten you with a knife now". OK wtf. I didn't like her much before tht but that made NO sense.

And as for miss Slut-OC. Why was she even AT that wedding? A 19/20 year old at a wedding for a 28 year old? They're most likely not friends. And the fact she was there with her friends implies she wasn't related.

All the character interactions needed some desperate help, except for the group of guys. They did ok together.

So yeah, lots that pissed me off/drove me nuts, but sitll didn't hate it. Probably won't be interested in ever seeing it again though.

Yarrr! I agree with almost all yer points, scurvey dog! But I just finished my summer movie reviews the other day, as this here brain is as slow as a deadman's heartbeat, so I just started my reviews of the 4 fall movies I've seen so far. But nargh, 'The Last Kiss' left me wanting to burn Paul Haggis' house to the ground. AARrrrrrr.
