I hate to ask this question because it probably will sound very stupid, but, it has a purpose.

Do you know if the walls were washed down with borax or even a baking soda solution prior to being prepared for a primer.

Do you know if a primer was used under the paint itself?

If the answers are 'no' to both questions, that maybe a source of your problem. If it's not the primary source, it's a contributing one at any rate.

Depending on how long you intend to stay where you are at, you may consider washing down the walls with either a borax or natron solution, letting them dry completely then
sealing them with two or three coats of primer - oil based preferably followed by a high quality durable paint.

In addition to this, have you considered getting an ionizer such as the one sold in sharper image?

I know it's an arm, a leg and half your torso, but in the long run, the thing pays for itself because you cut down on what you might otherwise spend on doctor's visits, anti-allergy meds, etc.

Just a thought.

Hugs.

I'll ask my landlady what they used as a primer...and if they didn't they'll need to go back and do it again because that shit don't float!

Haven't done the natron scrub yet, but it's on my list.
Been keeping the windows wide open, but certain small spaces are still reeking.

Thanks for your recommendations. Stale smoke is super-stinky and must go!
