PART EIGHT:

Kurt bounced up and down as The Dalton drew closer to Port-au-Prince. He had never visited the big town before and, forgetting for a moment that being here wasn’t his idea, was quite excited to see it, hence the bouncing.

Blaine stood beside him, an indulgent smile on his face. He loved just watching Kurt, whether the younger man be sleeping, sewing, or anything else. He particularly liked it when Kurt’s eyes shone with happiness or excitement as they were doing now. It was those times when Blaine felt that Fate had definitely pushed the two of them together.

“Can I go ashore?” Kurt begged as he continued bouncing on the balls of his feet. “I want to get some new material for some new shirts and trousers as I simply cannot keep wearing these same clothes for another couple of weeks.”

Blaine chuckled as he replied, “Of course you can, so long as you promise to stick close to either me, Wes, Nick or Jeff at all times.”

“I promise.” Kurt wasn’t about to run away, not in a place which had such a bad reputation as Port-au-Prince. Things might be bad in his hometown but they were worse here. He clapped his hands in excitement. This was going to be so much fun!!

**********

“Alright, we need plenty of thread, needles and cloth,” Kurt stated to Nick and Jeff, who were currently escorting him.

“Why?” Nick asked as Kurt went over to one of the stalls lined up on the main thoroughfare.

“I’m not going to be with your ship forever,” Kurt pointed out blithely, not acknowledging the slight pain those words caused him. “All of you need to learn to sew.”

“We can sew,” Jeff protested before adding, “Kind of.”

Kurt rolled his eyes. “Exactly. So I need some extra material to practise on, and plenty of thread because by the time we get back to Port Royal, I want everyone to have mastered the basics and perhaps even have made themselves a new pair of trousers.” Shirts were a little more difficult for beginners.

Jeff and Nick shared a glance; Kurt’s eventual departure was one that the Warblers didn’t like discussing. Kurt had become one of the family - a mother, almost, in the way that he looked after the pirates and made sure they ate properly, and that their clothes were in good repair - and no-one wanted to see him leave. Especially since Blaine was happy, and a happy Captain made for a happy crew.

“I’d suggest a uniform - blue, with red piping,” Kurt continued, “only as pirates, you really wouldn’t want to stand out. So we’ll just go with drab greys, browns, and so on.” He had spent a bit of time working out a nice uniform for them before realising that they probably wouldn’t want to wear it. Still, it had been a nice excuse to daydream about Blaine modelling the uniform for him…

Nick was about to comment when he saw a group of men nearby who were staring at Kurt. There were a couple of expressions that were coveting while the others were calculating. Realising that Kurt was a prime target for kidnapping or just a beating, Nick steered him away from the group towards one of the stalls. “There might be some suitable material here,” he suggested while gesturing to Jeff.

One look behind them informed Jeff as to what was going on and he nodded at his partner. In case of trouble, the Warblers had been told to stick close together so it was just a matter of going back down the street quickly and alerting the next group to the potential problem.

Kurt remained blissfully unaware of what was going on until, just as a group of the Warblers neared him, the group of men approached. “How much?” the foremost of the group asked. He wasn’t the tallest, being of just average height, but his semi-toothless grin and scarred face gave him a sinister presence.

Nick turned, arms crossed over his chest. “How much for what?” he inquired.

“Him.” The leader gestured with his chin towards Kurt. “I imagine he cost you a pretty penny.”

“Excuse me?” Kurt exclaimed, belatedly realising that the men were talking about him. He would have said more but Jeff sidled up to him and hissed a warning to be quiet.

“He’s not for sale,” Nick refused. He normally wasn’t this confident in speaking to such violent types of men but knowing his fellow pirates were there helped.

The leader nodded knowingly. “New, is he? Doesn’t look like he’ll last long, skinny as he is, and so many of you.”

Kurt’s eyes betrayed his confusion as to what the man was referring to and then it hit him. The man thought he was a whore! Kurt went to protest this but Jeff quickly slapped a hand over his mouth so that he couldn’t.

“That’s really none of your business,” Nick was saying.

“You really shouldn’t let him out on the streets,” the other man stated, leering at Kurt. “Someone might try to take him.”

“Thanks for the warning,” Nick dismissed the man with a hard look. “Now go find someone else to ‘play’ with.” He turned back to the Warblers and gestured that they should start moving away.

When they were out of earshot, Kurt refused to remain silent any longer. “They wanted to buy me?!”

“Or take you,” Wes put in from his position behind Kurt. He had been in the group that had trailed Kurt, and had watched the interaction carefully. If Nick hadn’t been able to handle things, Wes would have stepped in but fortunately, he hadn’t needed to. “This is why Blaine insisted on you staying with some of us at all times.”

Blaine had known something like this might happen? Kurt wasn’t sure whether to be mortified or pleased that Blaine had told the other pirates to protect him. Well, probably pleased at the moment, since he had just escaped being taken by some men to be used for their dubious pleasure. But he couldn’t let Blaine know that - not right away, at least.

“Not to scare you, but you’re just the type that some men like,” Jeff stated, speaking from experience. He was tall and slender, just like Kurt, and could be thought of as more feminine if he dressed just right. “So maybe we should get you back to the ship before someone tries something.”

Kurt’s eyes widened. “But I haven’t bought anything yet!” he protested.

“Priorities, Kurt,” Wes said firmly. “Which would you rather - a new set of clothes, or being kidnapped for nefarious reasons?”

When it was put that way… “Fine,” Kurt sighed. He would somehow have to make do with the clothes he had. Unless… “But you gentlemen have to buy me the material, threads and needles. If you buy browns, greys, blues and blacks, you will need to find threads that match--”

“We can do that,” Wes agreed hastily; he didn’t want to delay in getting Kurt back to the ship. He detailed several of the pirates to protect Kurt while the rest of them continued shopping.

Over in a different part of town, Blaine was unaware of what was happening with his crew. However, he had come across a piece of interesting information. Upon buying some new rope for the rigging, Blaine heard a couple of men discussing what they were going to do about their sails since the sail maker in Port Royal had fallen deathly ill.

“They say it’s ‘cos his boy was taken by pirates,” one man said in a low voice.

“No chance of ‘im gettin’ the boy back then,” the other one stated. “Probably better off dead than knowin’ what they did to ‘im.”

Blaine froze. It had to be Kurt and his father that they were talking about. Had Kurt’s kidnapping really caused such a severe illness? Blaine couldn’t countenance it. All the same, if it were true, then he needed to get Kurt back there as quick as possible. He did not want to be responsible for Kurt’s father’s death or for Kurt not being there.

He swiftly paid for his purchases and headed off to find Wes. He needed to talk to his second-in-command and see whether they could make the journey back to Port Royal without stopping.

**********

Blaine and Wes decided to cut short their visit to Port-au-Prince in order to get Kurt home sooner. Provisions were hastily brought on board, enough to least them back to Port Royal with a few days spare in case of unexpected delays, and plans were made to set sail at first light.

That evening, Blaine joined Kurt in his cabin. “I hear there was a small problem earlier.”

“It wasn’t really a problem,” Kurt denied as he sorted out the materials the pirates had brought back for him. “Ugh, what was Thad thinking?” he complained as he noted the mustard-yellow material.

“Kurt, some men tried to kidnap you,” Blaine pointed out, going to stand next to the younger man.

“Like you, you mean?” Kurt paused in his perusal and turned to face Blaine, whose expression now portrayed his hurt. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. I know now that you didn’t have… ‘impure intentions’ towards me at that time.” He blushed, thinking of the evenings they had spent kissing since then.

Blaine smiled. “Are you implying that I have impure intentions towards you now?” he teased, nudging Kurt lightly.

“Well…” Kurt couldn’t think of anything to reply to that. Intimacy was still so new to him and he wasn’t always comfortable in talking about it.

“Seriously, Kurt--”

“Seriously, Blaine, I’m fine.” Kurt tentatively rested a hand on Blaine’s arm. “The others protected as per your orders and the bad men didn’t take me away. Everything’s fine.”

Blaine took a step back. The tone had been light but there had been something under those words. “Are you mad at me for protecting you?”

Kurt sighed. “No. I understand that you were looking out for me, which is really very sweet. I’m just used to looking out for myself.” Or having his father do it for him.

If it were up to him, Blaine would be protecting Kurt for the rest of their lives but he knew that wasn’t possible. He would take Kurt home and leave him there to live a safe life while Blaine went back to the seas. “I’m sorry for exposing you to the danger.”

“It’s not your fault,” Kurt absolved him of blame. “Well, it kind of is but this instance wasn’t. Despite the whole circumstances of being here, I am enjoying myself, Blaine.” That was the truth. Spending his days with the pirates, he had learnt so much about them and didn’t fear them anymore. And his nights with Blaine were teaching him that intimacy wasn’t something to be afraid of.

Blaine closed the distance and tentatively put his arms around Kurt’s waist from behind. They didn’t touch each other much during the day, only in bed where it was dark. “Even what we do together?”

Kurt flushed and stared at the fabric in his hand. “Yes,” he replied simply.

“Do you think you are ready for more?” Blaine wanted to touch Kurt’s skin all over, something he hadn’t yet been allowed to do. Kurt only permitted Blaine to touch so long as his fingers didn’t roam, which meant that the pirate had only felt a small patch of skin on the younger man’s side.

Kurt moved away from Blaine, uncomfortable with the suggestion even as his body stated that he wanted it. “Like what?”

“I want to touch you without your shirt.” Blaine figured it would be easier if they took things very slowly. However much he wanted to bury himself in Kurt and teach him how good loving could be, there was only so much time that they had left before Kurt would leave. Despite that, Blaine realised that he would be content with whatever Kurt would give him - an indication that his feelings were involved more than he had expected. “And for you to touch me, if you’re comfortable with that.”

“I’m… I’ve never…” Kurt immediately started to panic. Being naked in front of someone required a lot of courage and trust, and Kurt wasn’t sure that he had enough of either yet.

“I know. And we don’t have to if you don’t want to,” Blaine assured him. “But I just… I want to show you how pleasurable being with a man can be before we have to part.”

“We… we don’t have to part,” Kurt said hesitatingly. “You could come back to Port Royal with me.” It was the first time he had given voice to the fleeting thought, the fantasy that he didn’t like to admit had crossed his mind.

Blaine stared at Kurt. It wasn’t that he didn’t like the idea but… “What would I do there?”

“Become an apprentice to my father. That way, you could live with me and no-one would be any the wiser,” Kurt stated, crossing his arms over his chest in a protective gesture. He didn’t think Blaine would agree and knowing that hurt inside. He hadn’t wanted to like Blaine but he did and he didn’t know what to do about it.

Much as the idea sounded tempting, Blaine didn’t know whether it would work. “Your father would and I’m pretty sure that he wouldn’t be happy with the idea.” What father would want his son living in sin with another man in a society that didn’t tolerate such things?

Kurt couldn’t argue with that. He had never mentioned it but he was sure that his father knew about his preferences. Even though Burt had never said anything, Kurt didn’t think he would be happy about such an arrangement. Also, living in Port Royal, if they were found out, it would mean death for them both. Kurt turned away, uncertain what to do or say now.

“If we were to live on an island, say near David’s tribe…” Blaine started to suggest before trailing off. It was a nice fantasy but to ask Kurt to give up his life, his father, was not acceptable. “Can’t we just enjoy the time we have together?”

“By sharing pleasures?” Kurt asked. He had aimed to make that statement sarcastic but it came out more uncertain than he would have liked.

“Yes.” Blaine moved closer again and took Kurt’s hands in his own. “I promise it would be good.”

Kurt bit his lip; a part of him was tempted to give in and see just what every man boasted about in Port Royal (with woman, naturally; no-one was stupid enough to put about if they were intimate with men). But a larger part of him was scared of what it would do to his heart. Kurt equated shared pleasures with romance and marriage, and had decided that he would have to do without that in his life… that was, until Blaine had come along. If he let Blaine do…things… with him, Kurt feared that he might fall in love with the pirate and that was just a recipe for heartbreak.

“I can’t. Not yet,” Kurt added almost involuntarily as he withdrew his hands. “I’m sorry.”

Blaine was hurt by the rejection but tried to cover it up by shrugging his shoulders and affecting a nonchalant tone. “Don’t be. I’m not going to force you into anything you’re not ready for. I just wanted to let you know that I desire you.”

He retrieved Kurt’s right hand, kissed the back of it, and then stepped back. “I’ll be back later.” With no further explanation, Blaine left the cabin, intending to find the others and have a few drinks.

Kurt stared at the door for a few minutes, unconsciously rubbing at the spot on his hand that Blaine had kissed. That had been so unexpected and Kurt had to admit that he liked it. It raised feelings in him that unsettled him but at the same time, he had to wonder what it would feel like if Blaine kissed… other… parts.

The young man turned away from the door and looked at the material on the table, trying to get his mind away from thoughts he didn’t want to have. He really needed to get home and then he could put this whole adventure behind him and being with a man would never trouble his thoughts again.
