Each Monday oops, Tuesday now (sorry!) we will feature a discussion of the different facets of Sirius Black's character, his relationships, and other aspects of his life and ask everyone to share their own personal head-canon interpretations of things. This week's discussion:
Sirius & Regulus
As with last week's discussion about
Sirius and Dumbledore, we're not told a whole lot about these brothers' relationship in canon. So what are your ideas, what do you imagine? Here's a few thinking points to get you started, but feel free to share your head canon on any other aspect you can think of, too!
1. What was Sirius & Regulus's relationship like before Sirius went to Hogwarts? Were they close, or were the differences that would later place Sirius in Gryffindor house already keeping them apart? How about at Hogwarts: did they compete or fight, or just do their best to avoid one another, or...?
2. When showing Harry the Black family tapestry, Sirius says he "hate[s] the whole lot of them", refers to Regulus as an "idiot" for believing in their parents' "pure-blood mania" and as a "stupid idiot" for joining the Death Eaters, and speculates that he was killed on Voldemort's orders for getting scared and trying to back out. ("Well, you don’t just hand in your resignation to Voldemort. It’s a lifetime of service or death.") We know differently from DH, of course. Do you think Sirius might have changed his opinion of Regulus at all if he'd learned the truth about Regulus' death? And how do you think he felt about it at the time, knowing only the somewhat incorrect information that he knew? Did he grieve at all?
3. At the time Regulus joined the Death Eaters at age sixteen, Sirius had not been living at home for a couple of years, and possibly had even left Hogwarts (depending on exactly what their relative ages are). How do you think the news reached him that Regulus had joined the DEs?
4. In OotP Sirius seems keen to get rid of just about all the family things in the house on Grimmauld Place. Yet apparently he left Regulus's old bedroom alone, to judge by the things Harry, Ron, and Hermione find there in DH. Why do you suppose that is?
Again, discussion need not be limited to these topics. Feel free to talk about anything regarding Sirius and Regulus!
