It was tempting, of course, to stay and tend to his work. After all, it was not completed quite so thoroughly as it might have been, and he hated to leave when there were still things that might be done, no matter their deadlines - but he'd promised to meet with Suou, and so he had an obligation to do so. Indeed, when Edgeworth looked out his office window, Suou was there (early); with a sigh, he looked down at the work on his desk and, in spite of that temptation, began packing up his briefcase ( ... )

There he was! Tamaki practically bounded up to meet him, hardly able to contain his excitement. This was it! The moment that would change all moments from here on out! Ah, and he was carrying a briefcase as well; how charming! How devoted to his duty Mr. Edgeworth was. Even on a Friday, to bring home work ( ... )

"They're places where animals are kept, and they're underfunded," Edgeworth responded, sighing slightly in spite of himself as Suou bounded in front of him. He was quite nearly leaping about. It was thoroughly undignified - but at least Edgeworth would have a good benchmark against which he might measure the dog he was going to adopt. So long as it was less energetic than Suou, he'd be able to deal with it.

"Yes, they're quite often dirty. However, just as often, they're kept clean. So long as proper measures are taken for sanitation, and to ensure the health of the dogs, they're not by any means depressing places.

"Did you own a dog back home?" It could, by Edgeworth's estimation, go either way; on the one hand, Suou seemed energetic enough to keep a dog, but on the other he seemed surpassingly irresponsible.

'Underfunded'! What a charming word that was, too. 'Underfunded' meant that it would be of a particularly fine commoner variety. An especially common commoner's establishment. It wasn't the depressing aspect of the pound that Tamaki was interested in--no, no! More he was interested in its common air: in the atmosphere! After all, if he was to live like a commoner here, he should know all sorts of commoner things. And the dog pound was just one of them ( ... )

Of course his dog would be named Antoinette, and of course she would sleep in his bed, and of course he'd have a staff to care for her. The last, honestly, was a relief; a staff would ensure that she was at the very least fed and bathed and never in any sort of danger of serious harm. The former two were enough to make Edgeworth shake his head.

"I have," he answered levelly. "Likewise, if she is indeed in some sort of duress as a result of my absence, there is someone at home who will take care of her." Gumshoe would, as a matter of course, feed Pess daily and tend to her well; Edgeworth's only concern was that he'd end up feeding her those horrific instant noodles of which he was so fond. Pess deserved better by far.

"Of what breed is Antoinette?"

"Breed?" Tamaki glanced down the street, taking stock of their surroundings. Ah, they were quite close! That was good! It wouldn't do to stay out too late, or else they would risk being too close to the sirens. "Ah, Antoinette is just a dog--but she is wonderfully intelligent! I have trained her to do any number of tricks, and she will come when you call her, and everything!"

Although--well, he left the part out where Antoinette would sit on you and lick your face and not get off until she fell asleep. Tamaki found that absolutely endearing, of course, but Mr. Edgeworth didn't seen as if he would be the type to share such a perception. Really, he was quite like Kyouya, in some respects.

"What is your dog's name?" He glanced over at Mr. Edgeworth. "Ah, but I'm glad to hear that she's being cared for! It would be terrible, if you were forced to live in suspense, not knowing what had become of her... How good, that you have friends that would safeguard her in your absence!"

Another surprise: Edgeworth had anticipated, rather, that Antoinette would be a hand-picked dog of the finest lineage and breeding. Failing that, he’d anticipated that Suou would declare proudly that she was a mutt and wait joyfully for the accolades regarding this fact to come pouring in, as he did whenever he announced his fondness for commoner this-and-that. The fact that Suou wasn’t certain of her lineage and didn’t use it as a signal of either his nobility or his largess was...frankly, encouraging. Edgeworth strongly disliked it when people utilized their pets in such a way, and so when Suou said that, he nodded in approval - just once, and subtly. Better if he didn’t see it. Best if Suou didn’t know of any approval at all.

“Her name is Pess,” Edgeworth answered shortly, and felt that was quite enough. It wasn’t that he was lonely for her, it was merely...Well. Perhaps he was lonely for her. Going for a new dog was rather rubbing that in a bit.

"Pess! What a fine name!" And it really was, too; there was something simple and sweet about it. Although it was surprising that Mr. Edgeworth would have chosen such a name! Tamaki gave him a sidelong glance (that probably wasn't as sly as he thought), a glance up and down. Hm! Hidden depths, indeed! "Did you name her, or did she come with it? That's the way that it's done at a commoner's dog pound, isn't it--they name them for you?"

Ah, but there, ahead--there it was! The place in question! The commoner's dog pound. The commoner's dog pound! Tamaki bit his lip, hard, to keep from shouting out about it. No. Be slow! Be calm! He shot Mr. Edgeworth another glance, though, very surreptitious. Had he noticed? He surely wouldn't shout about it, but he would have some reaction! After all, buying a dog: what could be better?

Nothing, of course! And even Mr. Edgeworth would have to acknowledge that!
