Liquid had a nice right hook, he had to admit; and Big Boss was vaguely glad that there was a wall in close proximity to support himself on. The ache in his chest was a little bothersome, too. Pointless, indeed...who'd ever want an easy victory?

Or fight if there was no satisfaction to be found in it.

He raised a hand to his bloody lips, and they curled into a tiny smile as he saw the red on his fingertips.

"Yup," he said. "That's what I've been trying to tell you."

He heaved a shaky sigh, glanced around and spotted the cigar he'd dropped -- he bent down to retrieve it, it was still lit, and smoke still trailed from the red ember at the end. Couldn't afford to waste good tobacco, after all.

"So, do you think is this going to be a regular thing, or can we agree that this doesn't get us anywhere. I have to get back home, too. You can either come with me or stay here and mope, your choice."

He gave a low noise of irritation, looking away.

"As little as I want to admit it, you're right. This is getting us nowhere." The rare admission came out of nowhere, but the rest of his father's words confused him.

"What on earth are you talking about? I don't bloody well mope." He folded his arms over his chest, watching the man curiously. Surely Big Boss wouldn't be so much of an idiot as to invite him to come with him. He'd been trying to kill him, after all. He must have been listening wrong.

Then again, it wasn't the first time the man had said such a thing, was it? He seemed to remember another time, long, long ago. It was too long ago for him to remember clearly, but he remembered faintly that the man hadn't known who he was at first. He almost smiled at the memory. Almost. Children were so naive. So trusting.

He cracked his jaw a little. Ouch. Good thing pain never got the better of him...or well, rarely, at least. At least he'd been trained well.

--And that Liquid had 'tried' to kill him? Didn't really matter. How many people hat he fought against and saved and later taken home anyway? No hard feelings. It was a good opportunity to teach Liquid some manners, too, and just like it had been the case with Snake -- he preferred to be able to keep a close eye on him. Having two Big Boss imitations run around free and without a leash couldn't possibly be a good idea. Especially when it came to Liquid and his temper.

"If you say so," he drawled, "Then do whatever it is you do when you're on your own. If you come with me, you'll have to behave. You haven't seen me angry yet, this was just a warm-up. Consider it a word of warning, ha ha ha."

"Why, father, it's almost as if you expect me to cause trouble!" Liquid teased, some of his usual sarcastic nature resurfacing. He pinched the bridge of his nose, considering the issue. It was a chance to gain more information, at least - and he had to admit it would be something interesting. A way to try to bridge the wave of apathy this place seemed to have instilled in him.

Liquid thought over the words for a moment or two. "Very well. I will heed your warning and be on my best behaviour," he decided. It was dangerous, especially if Snake was there - surely the FOXDIE would kill him before long - but he had always been a risk-taker. Life was meaningless without the thrill and challenge. He knew full well that this would be a troublesome and difficult thing he was doing, but he had no intention of getting on his father's bad side just yet. He was no match for the man at the moment. A grave miscalculation... but he would improve. For the moment, the man had earned his respect, if little else. He would abide by his rules.

For now.
