Shikamaru was always alert, but especially after receiving that "gift" in the mail the other day: a still-beating human heart. A threat, obviously, but the list of suspects was too numerous to effectively narrow down. He could guess at a handful of people who might be responsible, but guessing was as good as he could get. In any case, he refused to let it change his routine. He wouldn't be scared into hiding, even if he didn't intend to provoke action. Tonight - like every other work night - he checked in at Fangtasia, patrolled the streets, then headed home.

His weakness, of course, was that his alertness could only be as strong as any human's. He wasn't a sensor-type shinobi, and so he was only capable of sensing certain types of energy. Szayel's reiatsu was not among them. As he walked by the dark street, he was aware of the Darkness monsters lurking out of sight, but not the hidden Espada.

The smirk on Szayel's face broadened as he watched the ninja boy walk right past him, completely unaware of his presence. Silently, he unhooked his sword and sheath from the cord it hung from at his side, rising to a crouch and emerging from his hiding place.

Shikamaru got perhaps a handful of steps down the street, before Szayel was behind him, his weapon coming down to bludgeon him on the back of the head.

He realized someone was behind him not a second before the sword came down on him. Not enough time even for a replacement technique. Shikamaru went down, seeing stars but not unconscious as he probably should have been. He sprawled on his hands and knees for a moment, then rolled onto his back to direct a kick blindly up at his attacker's knees.

Szayel may have preferred to fight with his mind than his muscles, but that didn't mean he was a slouch when it came to combat. He jumped up, just avoiding the shot to his knees by inches, and landing over Shikamaru, a foot planted on either side of him. He sneered down at the boy, smoothly slipping his sword from its sheath.

"Now, now..." he sneered. "Be a good boy, Shikamaru. I have no desire to see you permanently damaged."

"You..."

Shikamaru knew well enough where this would lead if he didn't escape now. Szayel really made no secret of his contempt for him. Death would be the best thing to hope for, but it wouldn't be that simple, he knew. It wouldn't even be a battle. It'd be something else. Something worse. Like with AGI.

"Who cares what you desire," Shikamaru hissed back, jabbing his elbows out at Szayel's ankles to trip him up. The threatening blade didn't scare him.
