Szayel let out an annoyed noise as the boy elbowed him. It's not like it hurt, but it did make him shuffle a little to keep his balance. His lip twitched with contempt as he raised his foot, slamming it down on Shikamaru's arm as hard as he could...

...which, considering the difference in strength, was quite a lot.

"Little brat!" he spat out. "What makes you think you'll escape me?"

A bone in his arm snapped like a twig, sending a blinding pain through Shikamaru that momentarily numbed all thought. He couldn't even manage a scream, his mouth hanging open as he gasped and tried to reorient his mind.

But there wasn't very much to consider. He was alone, and the arm on which he wore his NV was now crushed, which meant that calling for help was impossible. Out of the few possibilities that remained to him, the only two he would even consider were: continue to struggle and hope that Szayel would accidentally kill him before they reached the second location; or surrender now and be taken in close-to-good condition, hoping for the unlikely chance of escaping from the second location later. Either way, he would suffer. Maybe in different ways. Thinking of what Szayel would do to him, he wanted death sooner rather than later.

But everyone else... Uryuu... Would they forgive him for giving in to death again? Without even trying ( ... )

Szayel watched the boy as he considered his position, a cold sneer on his face as he drunk in the helplessness rolling off of him. That helplessness eventually dissolved into acceptance, with a faint twinge of hope, as if there was any way Szayel would allow him the possibility of escape. Humans... what idiots.

"That's better," he replied, removing his foot from Shikamaru's ruined arm. "Thankfully, you won't be needing that arm anymore by the time I'm done with you."

Szayel crouched down, leaning close so the ninja boy could get a good look at the evil smirk on his face.

"Naturally, I will not trust you to get up and actually walk to our destination," he purred... before suddenly jabbing Shikamaru in the side with something -- a needle he had hidden in his sleeve, full of a powerful sedative.

Szayel didn't know about his accelerated healing ability. That much was apparent from his comment about the arm, which Shikamaru hadn't been very worried about because he could already feel the bones repairing. If left alone for an hour - maybe two - there wouldn't even be evidence of a break at all. Of course, it seemed Szayel intended to... what? Dissect him? Dismember him? How frustrating that would be for the mad scientist, who'd have to learn to cut quickly. It made Shikamaru think of how difficult it had been for him to dispose of Hidan's immortal body.

And that made Shikamaru laugh darkly. Karma had its way, didn't it? Redemption was really a waste of time.

The sedative was a gift. The rueful smile slipped from his lips as his head rolled back and he fell unconscious.

Szayel scoffed as he felt Shikamaru's spirit drifting off. What, did he have some secret that he was unaware of? It wouldn't matter; not when he got him on his examination table.

By the time the sedative wore off, and Shikamaru was able to awaken, he had already been moved. High above him, a bright light shone in his face, intended to blind him to his surroundings. That wouldn't stop him from feeling, however, and the cold of the metal table he was on was probably the first noticeable thing. The next would be the fact that he was strapped down rather tightly...

Or, at least, his torso was. His arms and legs had already been partially separated from his body, hanging on by just a few stray veins and flesh as the unexpected healing abilities that Szayel hadn't known about tried to work.

The final thing that was noticeable was said mad scientist swearing, shuffling around somewhere in the darkness beyond the light.

"Count on the Quincy to find the most annoying creature in the port to fornicate with..." he grumbled, followed by ( ... )
