Summary: Duo goes to the hospital to visit Ion after a scary night, but arrives to something unexpected

And it was going to be a very long wait. Hours ticked by with agonizing slowness. Someone stopped by to offer Duo and the other people waiting in the waiting area something to eat. People came and went, and some ended up in the same situation as Duo. Waiting and waiting and waiting...

Finally, sometime after 9 AM, a nurse approached Duo.

"Your friend is out of surgery," she told him pleasantly. "He's recovering in his room if you want to see him."

Duo jumped, having dozed off just a few minutes before and not expecting anyone to approach him so soon after. He stared at the nurse for a second, brain slowly registering what she was saying to him.

"Oh... yeah, thanks..." he mumbled, letting out a massive yawn and scratching at his messy hair. She left him to go to the room at his own pace, giving him enough time to stretch and pop his back, shaking off the short nap before finally shuffling to the door and knocking on it.

It was silent on the other side of the room for a long moment, before the faint sound of shuffling could be heard, followed by a faint, "Come in."

Ion was sitting up on the bed, a breathing line in his nose to help him breathe, and that was about it. The other machines had been moved out of the room, and aside from being paler than normal, Ion looked better than he ever had in the brief time they had known each other.

"Ah, Duo," Ion began, his voice faint from lack of use. "I hope you were not waiting long."

"He speaks!" Duo said with a grin, trying to not look as tired as he felt. He waved a hand, dismissing the comment about waiting.

"Nah, I wasn't. You look a helluva lot better, kid."
