Telling Hidan that Shikamaru's ultimate goal was to "reawaken" Hidan's empathy would have made Hidan laugh. Just saying something like that was generous in and of itself, anyhow - maybe too generous. "Reawakening" empathy implied that empathy had lived in Hidan at some point in the first place ( ... )

He knew to expect it because this was the sort of greeting his brother often gave him when they grew up together, in that place. It was all punches and grabbing between them, even when Hidan was in a good mood. So he didn't struggle when Hidan took hold of his shirt, but not because he was trying to make any kind of point. It was just so... normal.

"Thought you might be hungry," he mumbled honestly, holding up the paper bag in offering. Maybe it'd get Hidan to let go of his collar. "You can throw it out if you hate it. I don't care."

But he didn't let Shikamaru go. He yanked on his collar instead, like Shikamaru was a stubborn dog Hidan was forcing to move. Back, both of them, into Hidan's apartment, which at least didn't stink of spilled blood yet. It was just dingy, like the usual tower apartment, dull with transience and overuse at once ( ... )

Of course. There had to be something wrong with him, that this entire situation wasn't frightening in the least and was - in fact - strangely comforting in its familiarity. Was he that far gone down the road of fucked-upness? That desperate just to see a face from the past? Did he really miss Hidan, even knowing what he did now?

If so, he probably deserved what was coming to him.

"You won't believe me if I tell you," was his answer. Shikamaru still didn't fight to free himself from that grip. He was as light as he could possibly be, near-skeletal as his frame was, and easy to drag around the apartment. He did make some attempt to keep on his feet, at least. "It doesn't matter, anyway."
