And they said Mondays were the slow night at the club.

Joe wasn't around often on the weekends, busy running another club, keeping up another entertainment gig, but the crowd here at the Mall's most popular dance spot was still exciting and pumped with energy, even on a Monday.

He stood at the DJ's mixer, playing with sound, making the bass thud like heartbeat through the subwoofers till the whole towering place seemed to thrum with a steady pulse.

Out on the floor, some were dancing, others just standing around and bouncing slightly on their toes. Glowsticks waved. Other goodies were passed back and forth, in the darker corners where strobes and passing spotlights couldn't reach.

It was cool, empowering, to hold your thumb on the controls of this place.

The alarm said 10:00, when he rolled over and stared at the red lights.

There were strange, electronic blips, like a static pulse, lingering on his mind. He was used to waking up that way after nights at the club, with a raging headache...but usually he woke up closer to two or three in the afternoon.

They said the drug could tire you out, make you sleep deep. That an hour or two napping could feel like the best night's rest. Wow. This one felt like he'd had a week to lay around.

After the scrap in the alley, coming home- (which to be honest, he wasn't even sure was real, or just another dream) Joe was expecting to wake up sore and wanting to grab a Cure from Roxas or Xion...

Instead, reaching around for the place on the back of his neck that monster or person or...whatever had bit, it just felt...itchy. A little bit strangely smooth, under his clipped nails ( ... )

Normally Roxas would be at work by now, but one of the baristas who usually took late afternoon shifts had asked to switch with him. It was kind of nice to sleep in-not something he got to do too often, so he stayed in bed for a long while, staring up at the ceiling and enjoying the muddy not-asleep, not-quite-awake feeling.

Until he heard Joe moving around on the bottom bunk. Roxas had fallen asleep before his roommate got home last night, so it must have been late, but if he was awake now, maybe they could all have breakfast together.

"Hey." He swung his legs over the side of the bed, letting his feet dangle. "You up? I think I want to make pancakes."

His attention drifted lazily to the alarm clock's digits again, and the tiny, gleaming hexagonal pattern spidering out over the snooze button. Then to Roxas' feet, hanging just about six inches in front of his face.

He has a sudden smirking urge to haul him down by the legs, swing his friend into the darkness cave, and tackle him into a savage tickling war, which is just about how every good morning should start.

But then there's a darker, stranger thought that slips up through that intention, and vague wondering of how hard his stubby nails would have to bite down into his friend's skin to draw blood, and if becoming blood brothers would somehow make the both of them stronger- shining.

He blinks the disturbing vision off, rubbing again at the back of his neck. What a really weird dream he must have been having. Sharing blood made you stronger? Cutting people open could give them incredible power? Hah! Not with a keyblade-

Unless... But if I touched a keyblade, He found himself thinking instinctively, imagining Sora's Kingdom Key ( ... )

Roxas wasn't surprised that it took Joe a little while to reply. His friend wasn't what anyone would call a morning person, and with the late hours he worked, there was no reason to expect him to be especially alert and chipper when he did finally awaken.

He was surprised when he felt a hand close around his ankle. He tensed up immediately, expecting an imminent tickle attack, but the moment only grew stranger when it didn't come. Morning roughhousing wasn't unheard of, but Joe didn't usually drag it out. Over and done with, it got the blood pumping and shook off traces of sleepiness.

But something was..different. He felt the finger on the bottom of his foot and was a hairsbreadth away from kicking it away when it withdrew on its own.

What the heck? Maybe Joe was having more trouble waking up than he thought ( ... )
