THE SHOPPENING acemedium August 16 2011, 02:39:11 UTC
It had been some time since Maya saw Re-l last, so being told they were to go shopping was a pretty pleasant surprise. Especially since Phoenix--

... Well, best not to think about that. More importantly, it was Diego's birthday (and he was moping), which meant clearly it was up to them to put the "happy" into it. She'd already snooped enough to find out the date and made a card and put a few things together for him, but there was still something missing.

... And she was curious to see what Re-l had in store for this excursion, as well.

After her conversation with Diego the week prior, Re-l knew that he was going to take this "thirty-fifth" birthday (honestly, she didn't believe it) too seriously. Raul had reacted horribly to his thirtieth. She didn't think she could trust Diego to take it in stride. Who could blame him? He lost five years of his life to a coma.

It was a good time to go out with Maya, too. She had wondered how the girl was doing and she wanted to spend some time with her. She'd want to cheer Diego up too, after all.

Re-l picked her up in her car and was driving them to one of the nicer shops she knew of in the city. "We'll do some shopping before we head over to Diego's place. I think a little surprise for his birthday is in order." She offered the girl a faint smile. "What do you think?"

Maya had greeted Re-l excitedly enough, as usual, but upon being driven most of her time was spent "ooohing" and "ahhhing" over the various aspects of the car, and watching the scenery go buy in a blur. She'd almost pressed her face against the window a few times, and she'd definitely wiggled in her seat to make herself feel more comfortable. Being driven was a pretty rare thing for her, after all.

Upon being addressed (she'd tried her hand at smalltalk, but honestly, the car was too distracting to do that now), Maya looked up. "I think you're onto something, Ms. Mayer! We've gotta work extra hard to make sure his birthday is super happy, especially since I saw him sulking when he left for work this morning."

She paused. "But we'll probably need to knock our heads together to pick out some non-coffee gifts..."

You'd think the girl had never been in a car before. But then, with Siren's Port so easily accessible by train or bus... But if Edgeworth owned an expensive car before coming here...

Oh well. It wasn't her place to pry.

"Did you?" And he was being obvious enough about it. That wasn't a good sign. "Daedalus and I got him a record player and some old jazz records. I figured he'd like them. But for you..." It might be difficult. She stopped at a stop light and looked at her. "What do you think he'd like from you? Do you have any ideas?"

Birthday Boy Gets Home beenwaitinglong August 16 2011, 02:55:57 UTC
Mir wasn't waiting in his usual spot on the back of the sofa, which was odd. The lights were all off, but with the visor the lack of black cat was obvious.

"Where'd you get off to, cat?" he said, reaching for the light switch.

The cat was actually rubbing himself against Re-l's legs, not unlike what her own cat would do at home, and she was almost afraid he was going to ruin everything. Maya and her had gotten there a little earlier to set things up for Diego. There were a few gifts on the table and food was keeping warm in the oven; they had ordered something in not too long ago.

When the light flickered on, she looked up and smiled at him. She was wearing a simple dress that came down to her knees - in red, as Maya had insisted - which went very well with her usual boots.

She was a little uncomfortable throwing surprise parties, but it was small and simple, after all. "Here he is," she said, lifting the fact into her arms. "Surprise."

On the other hand, parties were Maya's specialty, and she was more than happy to make the preparations, small and simple party or not.

She'd gotten a dress, too, simpler and more girlish than Re-l's, (and compliments of Re-l, which had caused her to smile really widely) but it was red, too, so they matched. Maya herself had just gone to eye up the food (yes, in the dark) when she heard Diego enter, and she sneakily straightened herself out and prepared her best huge grin.

"Surprise! Gotcha, Mr. Armando."

He shouldn't have been surprised, really, but couldn't help the slightly stunned expression that slid over the lower half of his face.

"Ha...! Oh, come now, you didn't have to go to this trouble..." he began to stay, but a little grin was coming to his face anyway.

"How sneaky."
