Birthday Boy Gets Home beenwaitinglong August 16 2011, 02:55:57 UTC
Mir wasn't waiting in his usual spot on the back of the sofa, which was odd. The lights were all off, but with the visor the lack of black cat was obvious.

"Where'd you get off to, cat?" he said, reaching for the light switch.

The cat was actually rubbing himself against Re-l's legs, not unlike what her own cat would do at home, and she was almost afraid he was going to ruin everything. Maya and her had gotten there a little earlier to set things up for Diego. There were a few gifts on the table and food was keeping warm in the oven; they had ordered something in not too long ago.

When the light flickered on, she looked up and smiled at him. She was wearing a simple dress that came down to her knees - in red, as Maya had insisted - which went very well with her usual boots.

She was a little uncomfortable throwing surprise parties, but it was small and simple, after all. "Here he is," she said, lifting the fact into her arms. "Surprise."

On the other hand, parties were Maya's specialty, and she was more than happy to make the preparations, small and simple party or not.

She'd gotten a dress, too, simpler and more girlish than Re-l's, (and compliments of Re-l, which had caused her to smile really widely) but it was red, too, so they matched. Maya herself had just gone to eye up the food (yes, in the dark) when she heard Diego enter, and she sneakily straightened herself out and prepared her best huge grin.

"Surprise! Gotcha, Mr. Armando."

He shouldn't have been surprised, really, but couldn't help the slightly stunned expression that slid over the lower half of his face.

"Ha...! Oh, come now, you didn't have to go to this trouble..." he began to stay, but a little grin was coming to his face anyway.

"How sneaky."

"I did tell you that we'd be doing something special for your birthday next week. And in celebration of you winning that case." She put Mir down and stroked his back. "Not that you wouldn't have won it anyway."

She was glad he was surprised and somewhat pleased, though. It would have been a problem if he hadn't been very happy to see them.

At this point, Maya knew there was no way he could ever really be angry at either of them, so she continued to grin, confident in her success.

"That's right! It's your birthday, Mr. Armando, so it's gotta be happy. Especially since you kicked serious butt and all."

He smiled a little awkwardly, reaching up to brush his hair back away from his visor. "Well now... I hardly think I'm worth all that praise. But thank you. I was ready to just watch TV all night."

Yeah. Definitely pleased, and not doing a great job at being secretive about it, either.

"And look, you both even dressed up for the occasion."

"Oh, hush. You're being modest." It was the first in many potential cases that could be brought up against the people in AGI who hurt others. He deserved it.

Re-l quite nearly smirked when he mentioned their outfits and she glanced over at Maya. The other girl looked beautiful. How could she not get her that dress? It had helped her feel better, too, and that was the important thing.

"I thought it'd be something new and interesting. And looks how pretty she is."

"Yeah, don't be modest! You kicked butt, you deserve to gloat."

Maya had been surprised, actually, when Re-l had bought it. Considering the price. But it had a nice surprise, she felt more graceful and lady-like just wearing it. Re-l, though, was the real show-stopper, especially since Maya didn't remember ever seeing her wear a dress before.

The spirit medium flushed a little at the compliment despite herself. "N-No way! It's you who's pretty, Ms. Mayer. Look, look, Mr. Armando! She got dressed up all pretty for you, so don't let me catch you frowning!"

The grin on his face was a little more genuine now. "You both look like a million bucks," he said. "Though that dress makes you look very graceful, Maya." "Graceful" and "Maya" rarely went together in the same sentence.

He finally stepped a little further into the apartment, as though they had earned his feeling welcomed and got him suckered in to the idea. "And let me guess... a lovely shade of red?"

She smiled, looking back at Maya. "She does, doesn't she?" It was sometimes hard to see Maya being nearly her age, but... Well, here, she could see it.

Re-l turned her eyes back to Diego and smiled slyly. "Got it in one." It wasn't something she wore often, either. Red was a hit or miss most times. She never knew if it would look good on her at all. Darker colors were her style. "I brought some food over, if you don't mind." And Maya had taken the liberty of finding a cake, which was in the fridge.
