[He probably isn't supposed to be here. Oh, yeah, Gabriel said he could be here, unofficially, and encouraged it--and Sirius would have come no matter what, because who cares about rules and stepping on toes or any of it. Not that he's doing what Gabriel said. But he's here anyway.

And he has a drink. And it's a fairly good drink, not as good as one of his own creation, but he'll drink it anyway. He leans against a wall in a darkish bit of the room, observing--reluctant to show that he's enjoying this at all. But how can he not, this is the best sort of music and the best sort of party and it's almost like being at home.

Jack is meant to meet him here, but he's not particularly focused--he's just watching the stage, smiling faintly.]

[atrumcanis]

[He shakes his head at Ahiru, even though she isn't present, and takes another sip.]

What are you playing at, it's not weird. Surely you can appreciate how fit these girls are! And no, I haven't, incidentally, who is she?

[cowboy_newsie]

She's just a new girl. [A beat.] From this asylum.

And it is too weird, it's stupid.

[atrumcanis]

[He loos around at that, much more serious than before.]

From what asylum?

[cowboy_newsie]

Twenty years before mine. Not Edelweiss. But she . . . there's just a lot of similarities in our stories.

[atrumcanis]

[There's a wary pause. He looks around the crowded room--this isn't the place for it, but it's too late now--so he takes a step closer to try to make things a bit more private.]

Like what?

[cowboy_newsie]

Like the fire. Like her havin' a place in her head to disappear to. Like her parents bein' dead.

[atrumcanis]

But-- it wasn't Edelweiss, was it?

[cowboy_newsie]

No. Just another asylum-- one in London. But she's-- I mean, she's smart, too, Alice. She ain't stupid like most girls. She's smart and clever and-- I don't know. But I don't get the feelin' like I knew her before.

[atrumcanis]

In London?

[An English girl--well, that's good, that's brilliant. He takes a sip of his drink, considering the rest of it.]

And you're sure it wasn't Edelweiss? Or maybe-- I mean, what if there are others like it? [That wouldn't explain the knowing one another bit, though.] Could you have--met her? In New York?

[cowboy_newsie]

No, she's English-- she's never been to America. And Edelweiss were in Switzerland, about twenty years after she was in hers-- I mean, believe me, they were real big on lettin' us know where and when we were in Edelweiss.

[He pushes a hand through his hair-- but then glances over at Sirius.]

Y'know-- there were asylums aside from mine in the day. I mean, it . . . wasn't that uncommon.

[atrumcanis]

[He looks back at Jack, and he doesn't say anything straightaway.]

Yeah, and?

[cowboy_newsie]

I'm just-- sayin'.

[atrumcanis]

I mean--

[He hesitates.]

You're not... you're not saying that you might have met her in an asylum--at home. Somehow.

[cowboy_newsie]

No. Not-- no. It's just odd, that's all.

[He glances over.]

I-- no. That's impossible.

[atrumcanis]
