Orochimaru had been hard at work ever since his return. He still wanted to acquire a wide breadth of knowledge, but he currently had a few specifics arousing his interest. Memory, for one. Fascinating how, along with the fluctuations from the Core that caused people to come and go, this was equally inconsistent on an individual basis. Some remembered their stay in Siren’s Port. Others did not. Some received new memories from their home worlds, while others seemed to lose them. Secondary was Orochimaru’s concern with age, which was a subset of his interest in the working of the mind in relation to the Core ( ... )

His mind ran through a list of possibilities, alternatives- options, really- wanting to do everything except set foot anywhere near Orochimaru.

The most prominent of those desires was to get very far away as quickly as possible and pray the snake-nin somehow forgot he existed. Of course, that wasn't anywhere near close to a possible reality and with the suspicion he was being eyed with, Orochimaru probably could have just had him captured on a word. But now, faced with staying or fleeing, it was impossible to refuse.

Orochimaru addressed him as though he'd been expecting him, as if he had requested his presence and it'd be far too suspicious to the others there if he left suddenly. And then he probably would be captured ( ... )
