"Hey there."

Grasping once of Ocelot's hand with his one good one, he somehow managed a smile, though Jack had no idea how it looked - probably goofy. Ocelot was one of the few people he could identify by the sound of his steps alone, so he hadn't tensed up when the man had entered his room or approached him. Not physically tensed up, anyway; on the inside, it looked a little differently.

Adamska probably didn't like what he was seeing, and ironically, John was glad that he couldn't see his expression right then. He wondered if the man was feeling nostalgia, or perhaps even regret; if he hadn't taken that one eye years ago, then it wouldn't mean that he was damned to live the life of a cripple now if nobody found a solution for this problem.

"You shouldn't have come here," he said, trying hard not to have his words trail of in a slur and sound even more pathethic than he already was. High on drugs, and barely able to move. Barely able to hold a gun.

"I'll find a way."

Maybe.

Hopefully.

The strange smile and the big warm hand enveloping his own disarmed the rest of Ocelot's restraint, and made him feel something like an emotionally-pained teenager... a rapid descent from 30 to 15, an awkward feeling only Big Boss had ever inspired. On impulse, he wrapped his free arm around Big Boss's waist, and bent to hug him, tense with emotion. He held the position, cheek pressed against the man's muscle-ridged stomach. The silence was intimately affectionate.

Then he pulled back and punched him just under the ribs.

"What the hell did you get yourself into?" Ocelot hissed in a voice low enough that no passing nurses in the outside hall would overhear, though he kept his other hand in Big Boss's, fingers locked around the man's wrist as if he might sink away if Ocelot blinked.

Had he had eyes, he would have rolled them. Not out of annoyance, but out of pain; but like this, all he could do was gasp and groan. The painkillers he was pumped full of didn't let the worst of the pain of Ocelot's punch go through, but he still felt it - right where the protruding metal of the carousel had bore through his body, too. It wasn't the good kind of pain, though probably a very deserved one.

"That's more like it," Big Boss wheezed, squirming a little and instinctively trying to cover his stomach with his good hand, but Ocelot still held it. Now with him here, this really felt more like torture than medical treatment, and thinking of it like that was strangely...soothing. Distracting. Better than having to think of his own future; what would happen after this was over. First, he had to get out of thisHe didn't retaliate, though. He'd save that for later, when he could actually deliver a decent right hook ( ... )
