So...Hanukkah starts on Wednesday. Anybody else around here celebrate it? I know there's probably a lot of people who don't even know what it is, but since this is Canada I figure there's gotta be somebody else out there. I've seen some menorahs around, in between all the Christmas decorations. That's pretty much all we have as far as holiday ( Read more... )

According to Jubilee, time in our world doesn't pass, so I'm doubtful more than a second or two as passed there - try not to worry about those from home.

Is there anything special I can make, food wise? Or anything you want?

...What do you mean it doesn't...

...Wait, how would she know that if we can't even contact anyone outside the island?

[He needs a few moments processing this. Shakes his head at last.] I dunno. Latkes? Mom just bought them from the deli, but they were always good.

[Nose pinch]

Jubilee has gotten pulled home and returned. As have others. Sort of like the Chronicles of Narina mythos.

That's it? [Those are kind of a GIVEN.] Applesauce or sour cream?

Wow. I wonder if that'd ever happen to me. [Sounds a bit hopeful.]

I told you we didn't make a big deal out of it. [Shrugs] Applesauce is good, but we should have both really.

A long time ago the Jews lived in Judea, a tiny country in the desert which happened to be in the middle of some important caravan routes. As is common in the Middle East, war was raging, again. Judea, and the Jews, were taken captive and their religion banned. Their temple was looted and desecrated. But they survived, as my people do and have done. And eventually, they took back their People, and their Temple. It was cleansed and a new alter built. According to the Talmud - our religious teaching - the menorah - an oil lamp - needed to burn only olive oil, each night, through out the night. But there was only enough oil for one day. And yet, it lasted all eight days until the new oil was ready. An eight day festival was then held to celebrate the miracle, and so we repeat this commemoration each year, lighting candles or oil lamps each night to mark it.

Maybe things are alright back home and you're not missing anything. [Doesn't... sound good does it] I mean, maybe time acts odd here. Maybe it's not this time of year for her yet.

Time really...doesn't move at all, back home? How's that possible?

From what I've heard from others who... ah, have come and gone and returned again... it seems to just pause, or something. I don't know. Seems odd. Trauma went home a while back and picked up where he left off. Spent some time there and returned but... it wasn't that long here.

I don't know how it works, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Geez. That's...weird. Really weird.

[Quiet for a moment or two while he thinks about it.] But I guess it's a good thing for the holidays anyway. I mean, that they're not missing me.

There's another holiday coming? How many holidays are there?

A lot, I guess. A bunch of them kind of converge around this time of year.

Seems like. What's a menorah?

It's a kind of lamp that holds eight candles. You light one each night for eight nights until all eight are lit. It's supposed to commemorate this miracle that happened like way way back in Hebrew days? Where the Jews wanted to purify this temple that was defiled by Greek soldiers, and they were supposed to burn a menorah for eight days, but they only had enough oil for one day. But it lasted all eight and that was the miracle.

[Somewhere in the background is the howling of rope-faced dogs, and the yowl of one of the rat-guts. Jubilee's sitting on a roof rather safe.]

Anything food-wise I should pick up? I'm totally down with hangin' for Hanukkah.
