So, had a weird encounter the other night that got me thinkin'. I know some people go out in the Darkness every now and again. So those folks who do, what would you say is the biggest, meanest thing out there? Animal wise - like the rope-faced dogs.

Weird cloud of somethin' dark hovered in front of me the other night - swear to god I thought it was gonna... fuck, I don't know. Attack me or somethin'. But it just kept still and flashed, and I shifted quick enough to get out of there before it did anythin' else.

I'll refrain from chastising you for being out after dark alone, since my sentiments on that are already understood.

So far, the rope-faced dogs have always been a challenge. They're quick on their feet-- and their reactions aren't shoddy either. Highly dangerous if you're slower than they are.

Yeah, I know about those. There's some talk those tentacle things leave barbs in you, too. Don't know much about what the barbs do though.

Toxin, I believe. I've encountered one once. Thankfully I was fast enough to beat it down before anything could happen. But it had been one of the closest battles I had to fight here on the island.

I think I know what you're talkin' about. ...Might have read about them once.

You fight it, or just run?

Not sure what their called, but I'm not so fond of these cat things I've ran into. Real nasty bastards. Not the biggest thing though. Not sure on that. I've seen this... I don't know, human like thing as tall as a building walking through the streets at night, but I tend to go the other way.

What happened the other night? You alright?

Cat things. ...Like the rotgut cougars? 'Cause I've run into those. ...And the big thing sounds like somethin' to be worried about, but I'm more interested in the animals right now.

Just ran into somethin' weird and had a scare. Wasn't attacked or nothin'.

Hmmm no, not the cougar and kitten things. Those... I didn't like but I was able to get away from those easy enough... sort of. Anyhow, no... it's taller, faster then that. Only seen it a few times in the past few months but I'd rather not see it again. Shadowy... but lightning doesn't scare it off.

Lots of shit at night gives me a scare.

...That right? Huh. I'll have to look it up. [and put it on his list.]

Won't argue that.

Biggest and meanest animal So...so the usual mutation doesn't count, huh. Going by Darwin's guide, or what I've seen personally?

Right. I'd prefer a personal account, but I'll take what you've read too.

[The way your house DJ is so animated in his wide-eyed darkness-adventurer's enthusiasm for these monsters should worry you just a little, Sam, for how he spends his nights off.

No really. Joe is something of an adrenaline-tripping junkie for the Darkness, especially the monsters in it. He talks monsters like people talk baseball stats.]

Honestly they're not too big at all, but the biggest pain to avoid is that stupid pack of little cats that explode from the Rotgut Cougars- no literally, I've seen them, they explode and you get dozens of these crazed little things that come at you in a pack ( ... )

[wow. That was... quite the speech, Joe]

That's. That's, uh - that's actually real helpful.

...You go out there a lot, huh?
