The Pull is the force which brings us here, from various wheres and whens, and keeps us from returning, or leaving the island. You can feel it like a curious gravitational tug, if you're near the shore. It grows stronger further out, I'm told.
There is an artifact known as the Core, its whereabouts currently uncertain, and the knowledge of its making or design lost, which has malfunctioned and is blamed for most of the problems here. It might be responsible for the Pull?
As for the Darkness- I don't know if you've been warned of the sirens, but after sunset, keep inside. There are monsters which roam the streets at night.
Winter coats can be found all over, in the department stores, or a specialty shop. The Mall downtown is popular, but there are smaller places, nearer in the fourth sector.
