If someone you hate, who you've killed before, who you're only being civil to because of orders, invites you over for a meal, wants to do something friendly with you, and otherwise acts like he has no bad feelings for you despite being enemies in the past, what would you assume? It's this person's fault you ended up enemies in the first place.

In both cases, other people will be around to watch what happens.

I'm not certain he's that smart or I wouldn't be confused.

Has he hurt you since... becoming enemies?

What is he like? ... Aside from confusing.

Stupid. Blindly trusting. Foolish enough to attempt protecting a different former enemy. Makes promises he can't keep.

[ Oh god, this is far too close to a certain situation with someone else from home. Only he wasn't killed or anything. ]

It sounds like a trick to me. If the other person is the type to want revenge, he might lay an ambush, or poison the food.

He's a moron who doesn't seem to want revenge for what's happened between us.

How do you know he doesn't want revenge? Did he actually say that?

[ Because Katara knew she wanted revenge against the guy who killed her mom. ]

He hasn't, but he's never seemed to be mad about it in the first place, which is stranger.

Make no assumptions.

Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best.

Hoping for the best seems foolish.

The point is not to show your hand.

You don't know what the other person knows.

I'm not inexperienced enough to show my hand.

He knows too much about some things and not enough about others.

Probably a good idea. Specially before your meal.
