I got a message back today from Hawthorne University confirming my grant for a course in Applied Law, and giving me notice about moving in on campus, so I'd like to thank everyone who helped me to make the decision, particularly Professor Aizen, who went out of his way to ensure I was seen quickly. Thankfully I'll be moving out of this mouse ( Read more... )

I guess it's a bit infuriating. I'm surprised, though. I thought you of all people would have had an answer.

Bugger all with the future, that's what I say!

Right.

[Because actually that was a really confusing answer.]

I was so sure you'd take the opportunity to tell me I'd become a killer all over again. Change of heart?

Never, ever! Because it can't happen, you know? It ab-so-lute-ly can't happen!

Surprised how?

First, that you're willing to handwave all of these disappearances and chalk it up to people mysteriously "going home" rather than the most likely but less pleasant explanations.

And also that you'd believe in something like fate.

You're right; there's all other possible explanations, and I've considered them, though not in any detail. AGI and SERO, for instance, obviously. But their illicit fringe activities have always been that--fringe. This quantity of missing people gets noticed, and it'll only generate anti-company responses, especially among the newcomers. I can't see why they'd risk that.

You're right, though. It's not impossible. That and a few dozen other possibilities.

The thing is, though, that I don't believe in fate. If I did, then I'd be believing in a future for myself that I can't escape; a future I don't want. I can't accept that.

If fate truly exists, then you can still defy it. Anyone can if they put forth the effort to change it.

Doesn't that disagree with the definition of 'fate', though? I'd rather not believe in it at all then have to be fighting back against something inevitable and defined. Maybe that's just me.

Then don't believe in it. You shape your own future, right or wrong. That's just how it is.

Those who accept that they have a pre-determined destiny and do nothing to fight against it are cowards. If you were being pulled downstream because of a current, would you fight it or would you embrace it, regardless of what was at the end?

[Yes, he didn't want to hear that either. You shape your own future. He really did choose it.]

But if I fought until I was too tired to fight, and then drowned in the water halfway down, what would that solve? How do I know that by fighting, I'm not rushing myself toward that same eventual fate?

I'm glad you got accepted, Yagami-san! It was nice of Aizen-san to help you out.

I'm still not super happy about it, since it's an AGI scholarship, but Hawthorne offered me everything I needed. It was the best choice even with my misgivings, and Aizen was really instrumental in that.

[Interesting comment...]

There's a lot of connotations with AGI...but at least you have the opportunity to learn. And maybe you'll be a little safer from them.

I owe it to the people I want to serve to get the best education possible, that's all. And maybe you're right. It could just as easily be the opposite though, when you think about it.
