[Over the network comes calm and steady voice, cultured in its pronunciations, though young and hampered with urgency:]

Computer, try once more. Connect me to Vicomte Albert de Morcerf.

[pause]

Connect me to Eugenie de Danglars.

[Another pause. And the young man sounds quite miserable.] ...Still nothing, all day. Well, I suppose I've no choice ( Read more... )

[He's heard him trying to get in contact with people, and now he lets him see another face to maybe help.]

I may assume you are from some kind of future then, Baron? This is Earth, and we are on an island called Siren's Port. It is in someplace in a country called Canada, and there is no way to leave.

However, I happen to know a physician who can help you with whatever it is you need help with.

Future? It was... 5053 when I left.

I'm aware of Canada. It just doesn't look like this, as far as I know.

The year here is 2010. September 12th, 2010, if that helps any.

While I haven't been anywhere else in this country, I believe Siren's Port is a case unto itself.

Obviously.

[He's clearly thinking this through.]

But time travel isn't possible. None of the research into it has gone anywhere.

Siren's Port pride itself on being self-sufficient, in some ways. But it really is Earth. How many Earths do you know? And what are they like?

[and... a pause.]

It isn't for an immediate issue?

I only know one Earth. What I said was just an expression.

It's out of curiosity more than anything else. I don't appear to be in any immediate danger.

What is it like? Cleaner?

The monsters should be out soon, so if you haven't hit any of them, you're more lucky than anything else. There is a decent doctor to contact, though. He's a newcomer, too.

Parts of it. Luna is a lot like this, too.

But there's still a lot more technology. And the cars and so on are different.

Siren's Port does offer a basic health care package which covers some medical expenses at any of the city-funded clinics. Even newcomers are treated as citizens in that respect (thankfully), and although most prescription medication and some procedures are not covered, payment plans can be arranged. General consultations are free at walk-ins, if you need to see a specialist, that might cost you.

I myself am a practicing general physician at Skye Medical, which does have a 24 hour walk-in, but I do see other newcomers regularly, and I can have you scheduled soon?

...you must feel quite displaced, for the moment. We're all familiar with that here, to some degree.

The phenomenal circumstances of this island have not been explained to you yet?

[Peering a little at him. The person in front of him seems a bit young for a doctor, but there are stranger things.]

I just need a physical done. As far as I can tell I'm in perfect health.

Ah! In that case, I'd be more than happy to see you- Although it can be miserable wait, even if you do schedule ahead. Bring some reading material when you come in- or keep the NV on you. Avoid weekends.

Would tomorrow be alright?

Baron d'Epinay, it's a pleasure to meet you. Despite the situation.

[Start putting on your Nobility Face, Alois, and don't be a jerk right now. He's trying, anyway, and manages to look quite apologetic indeed.]

Surely the payment will be sorted out, but that's concerning. How are you injured? I'd think discussions should wait till after.

[Franz has seen Nobility Face his whole life. It's kind of sad, a kid that age on his own never mind they're only two years apart in age.]

I'm in perfect health, actually. [That's just the problem.] I just wanted to get checked out, considering the circumstances.

I want to find out as much as I can about my situation. About this place.

Oh. I suppose that's not unwise. [Unsaid - in fact, he doesn't convey it at all - is 'well that's fucking dumb.'] Still, it's good to hear you aren't unwell.

I've been here about a month, now, and it seems both very long and not very long. Baron d'Epinay, I'm Earl Alois Trancy, but I'm definitely not of Paris.

I thank you for your concern.

[There's something about that look. Well. Franz smiles pleasantly. As Earl, he outranks Franz, after all.]

--Do you have some objection with Paris? [Amused. They are of a decadent lifestyle, there.]

I'm afraid the state of things doesn't improve unless you've a stuffed wallet, and it's quite impossible to leave, but you are on Earth I can assure you that much.

Welcome to Siren's Port, Baron d'Epinay. I'm Earl Ciel Phantomhive. It's a pleasure, although I'm sure we can both agree the circumstances could be far more palatable. I would suggest contacting Doctor Yumeno if you're in need of a doctor. To my knowledge he deals with newcomers on a regular basis.

Before I came here, I wasn't... [planning to live through it, God...] I wasn't exactly planning for a long excursion of this kind. I'm not sure they'd accept my money anyway.

I'm gratified to meet you just the same, Earl Phantomhive. You're... British, I take it? [He's never heard the name, but in this place, that may not mean anything.]

Canadian currency is strange...and colorful. But I digress.

Correct, I am. Just on the outskirts of London in the countryside is where my home is. It's quite a change in scenery.

...No kidding. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but the accommodations for newcomers are horrid.
