So, uh. A job, huh?

[So much for preamble. A mumble:] Guess this isn't a paid vacation.

Man, it was tough enough keeping up with the one back at home. There's no way the market can be easier over here, right? It's pretty tough, being a rookie without ever getting a chance to graduate...but there's gotta be some desperate guy out there ( Read more... )

I believe there was a walking skeleton musician, named Brooke, looking for assistance with his new shop not long ago...

[There are just too many things wrong with that sentence for a normal, newly-arrived guy to wrap his head around just like that.]

...What.

I know. That's a little bizarre to swallow, isn't it?

What other marketable skills do you have?

Marketable...marketable...

[The pause he gives certainly doesn't instill confidence, now does it.]

Well, I used to be a police detective where I came from. I uh...well, my memory's okay, I guess, and sometimes I- oh!

[Proudly.]

I whip up a pretty mean expresso!

[Man you sound a lot like Guy, particularly when you whine =|a]

Uh, it sounds like you were just trying to help.

[Not that he has any idea what a cabbie patty is. Or a vegetarian, for that matter.]

But it can't be that hard to get a job, right? Everyone can do something...

[Actually my name is Ichigo Kurosaki, kid.]

Yeah! But...it's more a matter of, there's already someone who does what you do, and they do it better, or they're already hired, or they don't have to be paid as much as you, or they've got connections, or...

...Well, the fact of the matter is, it's a tough world out there!

Sure, but, don't give up that easily. Just try to keep an open mind. What do you do?

A lot of things! I'm a handy guy to have around, really!

But if you meant before, I was a police detective.

They're serving vegetarian burgers at most places these days, I think.

Though are you more adverse to flipping burgers because it's disastrous, or because it's low-wage?

They are?

S-see! I knew it! I was a visionary back then! But nope, the guy didn't listen, and now it's his loss. Chances are, the joint's run to the ground by now. Bet it doesn't even exist anymore, all 'cause they were...vegetarian-discriminate!

[Whoops did he totally avoid that question.]

You should still be a visionary now! Although it looks like you're holding yourself back from getting a steady job, so it's understandable if you lost that talent.

I figure burgers just weren't my calling.

[A sigh.]

We can't all work in the fast food business. Come to think of it, though, you're pretty passionate about the grim and greasy. You work in a burger joint?

And here I thought it was us Americans who always talk about burgers.

[But she's just teasing!]

You find anythin' good?

[Recognizing that voice, and that knowledgeable talk about burgers, Adachi laughs.]

Hey now, you'd be surprised at how popular burgers are around Japan. Except we teriyaki-marinate everything. And yours are probably...double our size.

[Oh American stereotypes.]

As for the job search... [A small sigh.] Guess it'd depend on what you'd say is 'good.'

Teriyaki-marinate, huh? Can't say I ever thought about a teriyaki burger... Hey! [she laughs.] Now c'mon, I heard it was a Japanese fella who beat out Americans in some sorta' eatin' competition... what's that say about you guys, huh?

[Oh, but she kind of sobers up at that.] That probably means not good, huh?

Uh.

[Pause. Then, optimistically:]

There are options! Good news is that there's a police force here too, and they're pretty hard of luck in finding new members, so it shouldn't be that tough. Bad news is that apparently, the police aren't really...all that effective.

[But then again, when are they ever? Adachi has the grace to sound a little ashamed for their sake near the end of that.]

Don't suppose you've got better luck?
