So, uh. A job, huh?
[So much for preamble. A mumble:] Guess this isn't a paid vacation.
Man, it was tough enough keeping up with the one back at home. There's no way the market can be easier over here, right? It's pretty tough, being a rookie without ever getting a chance to graduate...but there's gotta be some desperate guy out there

What other marketable skills do you have?

[The pause he gives certainly doesn't instill confidence, now does it.]
Well, I used to be a police detective where I came from. I uh...well, my memory's okay, I guess, and sometimes I- oh!
[Proudly.]
I whip up a pretty mean expresso!

What's the job entail?
And how well does it pay?

Uh, it sounds like you were just trying to help.
[Not that he has any idea what a cabbie patty is. Or a vegetarian, for that matter.]
But it can't be that hard to get a job, right? Everyone can do something...

Yeah! But...it's more a matter of, there's already someone who does what you do, and they do it better, or they're already hired, or they don't have to be paid as much as you, or they've got connections, or...

S-see! I knew it! I was a visionary back then! But nope, the guy didn't listen, and now it's his loss. Chances are, the joint's run to the ground by now. Bet it doesn't even exist anymore, all 'cause they were...vegetarian-discriminate!
[Whoops did he totally avoid that question.]

[A sigh.]
We can't all work in the fast food business. Come to think of it, though, you're pretty passionate about the grim and greasy. You work in a burger joint?

[But she's just teasing!]
You find anythin' good?

Hey now, you'd be surprised at how popular burgers are around Japan. Except we teriyaki-marinate everything. And yours are probably...double our size.
[Oh American stereotypes.]
As for the job search... [A small sigh.] Guess it'd depend on what you'd say is 'good.'

[Oh, but she kind of sobers up at that.] That probably means not good, huh?

[Pause. Then, optimistically:]
There are options! Good news is that there's a police force here too, and they're pretty hard of luck in finding new members, so it shouldn't be that tough. Bad news is that apparently, the police aren't really...all that effective.
[But then again, when are they ever? Adachi has the grace to sound a little ashamed for their sake near the end of that.]
Don't suppose you've got better luck?
