Well, it's a step down from the military. The military deals with the entire nation, right? The police deals with things on a smaller level, like cities and towns. The big guns can't keep an eye on everything all the time - they've got to...polish their tanks and fight wars and stuff. So we police help out on a day-to-day basis, and make sure ordinary citizens are living peacefully.
