I've noticed more new voices than usual over the network recently, a high frequency of arrivals. I do wonder if the pull's activity correlates to the same force that generated the earthquake- if this is a sign of further trouble, or a side effect. Still no official word or scientific report, only street speculations. But there must be someone ( Read more... )

I think with good care, some patience, some healthy development, she'll be relatively happy and adjusted.

Well. I'll do my best. Not gonna leave her in the lurch. How's she doing medically?

Medically, what's left of her...appendages do need a bit more healing and should stay bandaged longer until we can re-attach the prosthetic. But other than that- on basic examination, she's in good health considering what she's been through, bruised a bit with the usual mild trauma from the rough landing naturally, but that's everyone.

She said another girl beat her up?

What where you able to learn from her?

That's about it. Girl named Lucy hurt her arms and legs.

Yes. That about lines up with what she told me. She was made to retrieve a girl named Lucy- perhaps another test subject? 'Lucy' must have fought back- whatever happened, her arms and legs were amputated as a result, and she fears for her failure.

"Fears for her failure." You mean she thinks they're gonna punish her?

Punishment, or perhaps merely disappointment. She seemed very insistent on assuring me she was a good girl.

Well. The only thing to do is improve her quality of life here.

Yeah. I'll see what I can do to help. This is far from the best place for a kid like her, but...Well, at least it's gonna be better.

There are others who have volunteered to help her, tutor her, give her some company. You will be her primary, of course, and I'll stay on as her physician.

...it's strange, this society of newcomers we have here, within the larger city, isn't it? Finding surrogate caretakers so informally...I'm used to relying on administration to process these things, situations like dependent immigrants without caretakers, but the government here seems content to overlook us.

I just don't want Nana, or any younger people who arrive, to wind up in vulnerable positions.

Well, I'm just glad we are pulling together like this. Where I'm from, orphans usually just get overlooked. Not even enough families to care for all of them, nowadays.

...I- I'm sorry. Did something go wrong with population manageme- I...mean I've gathered that other civilizations generally don't but- was there some kind of disaster?
