I defend them for a number of reasons. First and foremost is that they might not be guilty at all, and they deserve the chance to prove as much. After all, our system of justice is not perfect, and those who stand accused might not by the true culprit. By providing competent representation, I ensure that the innocent are not punished - and, therefore, that the guilty do not go free. It ensures the proper functioning of the system of justice to have competent defenders and prosecutors both.
