[Diego's sitting in his office, a rarely-seen place as far as his NV goes. It's small but furnished with a nice desk and... well, maybe it isn't small, maybe it's just the six coffee machines, the shelf of tin canisters of coffee grounds and... wow. Does Diego actually get any work done in here, or is he making coffee all day ( Read more... )

Another problem? [Daedalus seems a little weary. Maybe it's not the first call of this nature he's received in the past 48 hours/] What can I do for you today, Mr. Armando?

Did the prescription go through?

Yes. But I can't pay a hundred dollars for it. The prices went up with the new year.

Jesus Christ, why do this machine make everybody so damn philosophical?

Ha...! I'm always philosophical. I hardly needed an NV to do that.

Yeah, well, I still say it's the NV. Everybody's always askin' stupid questions that ain't got no answers. It's just January, mate, ain't no reason to get all sad.

Those who never think to savor the blend will do nothing but spit it out with a burnt tongue. That's one of my rules.

I don't think it's good to forget about anything! I mean, there's a different between not worrying about it and forgetting completely, right? Even sad memories don't have to be painful

How does one make sad memories stop hurting?

Well, sometimes there's good that comes out of them! So if that's the case, you should think about that instead.

Like a seedling that grows from the ashes of a fire.

And if it isn't the case? What would you do then?

You sound like you're in a good mood, Diego.

Though you shouldn't worry so much about the "things you can't get rid of".

Everybody's in a good mood in January. It's like I was saying about the blank slate. Looking forward to stepping out into it.

[Private]

I try not to. But, well... there's just some things you can't shake no matter how much you'd love to.

It doesn't really feel like a blank slate to me, even with the new year, but I guess I'm the odd man out.

[Private]

I know. But try not to worry about it so much.

Perhaps it's not so much a feeling as it is a hope. To want to throw away the unpleasantness and pain and vice of the previous year is natural. It's not surprising so many people would cling to the idea.

This isn't about any of that. For once.

[My, what an assortment of coffee makers. Just about one for every day of the week, no less. Color Elena impressed, but that's not the reason she actually called a perfect stranger. It was his words, his philosophical insights, that had caught her attention the most.]

You make it sound far too easy, letting go of the extra burden and weight of the past. For those with little on their shoulders, casting off the burden might be a bit easier. But for others, whose weights are much greater, it is very difficult - if not impossible sometimes - to even remove a little of that burden.

However, that isn't to say that those people carry their burdens out of choice. Some of us are unfortunate enough to be forever tied to those pasts, those mistakes, without an opportunity for freedom.

You don't need to tell me about burdens that can't be set down.

Many are burdened by things that cannot be changed or cannot be laid to rest. That doesn't make them lesser people.

I wouldn't assume such a role, everybody has their own burdens they carry. Who am I to remind them of it?

I never said that they were. In fact, I'm sympathetic to those who have to live their lives with that extra weight. I understand the feeling of being trapped by the past, by actions or events that have left marks and scars on them.

Just because they are trapped, or tied, to those burdens doesn't make them lesser people. If anything, if they are able to continue living, I would say they were stronger than the rest.
