[Diego's sitting in his office, a rarely-seen place as far as his NV goes. It's small but furnished with a nice desk and... well, maybe it isn't small, maybe it's just the six coffee machines, the shelf of tin canisters of coffee grounds and... wow. Does Diego actually get any work done in here, or is he making coffee all day?

He's got a cup right now, of course, which he sips every so often.]

"The object of the new year should not be that we have a New Year. It should be that we have a new soul." A new soul, a new being, a new start. That's the old cliche-- to leave behind the follies and foibles of the past and to step forward into a bright new future with a clean slate. We go, resolutely, into that open realm of possibility.

And a cliche it may be, but January always used to look brighter to me than December, as though I could see that clean slate before me.

[Siiiiip.]

But of course, there are things that cannot or will not be set down and left behind so easily. Past mistakes, regrets and sorrows that can't be dislodged so easily... they join us for the journey, along with the things we refuse to leave-- friends and family, causes, beliefs, hopes, dreams and ambitions.

As you take your first steps across the threshold, take a look at the weight you choose to bear with you. Tell me. What will stay and what will be abandoned in the past? What will you suffer gratefully, and what will you try to, and resent, when it cannot be forgotten?

Or is there such a thing-- something that cannot be left behind?

[He pauses, taking a long drink of his mug-- draining it.]

I'll take a cup of kindness yet. That's Blend #100.

[He switches off the feed... but then turns it back on, under a private channel.]

[Private to Daedalus Yumeno]

Speaking of things you can't leave behind... I had a little problem at the pharmacy today.
