This might seem an odd question, but how does one commemorate another's death here? I was told that there is a cemetery but because of what happens at night, most people are cremated and their ashes are sent away from the island. Is there, perhaps, a memorial of some sort for the unnamed deceased or perhaps something very generalized for others to ( Read more... )

I'm afraid that I can't answer your first query but as to the second I light a candle and think on memories of them.

You don't visit their graves? Or is this someone who was once in the Port?

When it is possible I do.

Ah, I see. Perhaps I'll do that.

I don't know about a memorial, but you should do something they liked to do. You know, to remember them.

That's...not a bad idea. I hadn't thought of that.

[He kind of smiles, though it's empathetic more than mirthy.] I have my moments.

I usually say a prayer.

I didn't think you were religious, Jack.

I'm not-- I mean, not really. But a load o' people are, so I might as well say a prayer for them, to whatever they believe in. Just in case, you know?

There's no harm in it, certainly. I simply hope those prayers will be heard.

Riku started a memory wall down at the baseball diamond, last summer.

But that's really just for newcomers.

I've seen it. It's...rather depressing, but it's a nice thing to do for the people who have left here.

Yeah. A memorial. Who were you thinking about?

My parents and sister.

I can count on one hand the number of burial funerals we've done at the funeral home. The cemetery is in pretty shit condition anyway so it makes burying anyone really fucking difficult.

[The things one learns living in a mortuary.]

Keeping something of theirs works, I guess.

But then...where do the bodies go?

Cremation. Cheaper, less hassle and a lot easier if there's not much left to bury.

But then...where do people go to remember them? Do they get a headstone as well?
