It's a small round cake which is traditionally made for All Saints Day or All Souls' Day to celebrate the dead. The cakes were given out to soulers who would go from door to door on Hallowmas singing and saying prayers for the dead. Each cake that's eaten would represent a soul being freed from Purgatory.

They're not incredibly sweet, but they're good.

A traditional practice where children and the poor would go from door to door on Hallowmas singing and saying prayers for the dead. In doing so, they'd get a soul cake. Each soul cake eaten would represent a soul being freed from Purgatory.
