[Diego is sitting calmly in the corner table near the window at Common Grounds, a classy little coffee house not far from the government offices where he works. There are seven empty cups of coffee on the table and one more full one in his hand ( Read more... )

[Someone looks pretty damn pissed about what's going on in that coffee shop.]

Five minutes and I'll be there. I'll bring an ambulance.

I don't think so. Like I said, I wasn't paying attention until things had already gone berserk. [He has a sip of the iced coffee he'd scrounged up, shaking his head.]

Unless you want to know what a Sumatran blend is supposed to taste like.

[She nods, glancing over at the coffee he found.]

I don't think that would help much, but I appreciate it. Sorry that your afternoon was ruined.

It's all right. [Siiiip.] This still isn't the most excitement I've ever had in a coffee shop.

Provided they clean up in time, they'll do another one next week.

I don't know why they wouldn't get everything fixed up by then.

[She sends off her notes to the police at the station.]

Want me to drive you home?

Sure. Let me grab my briefcase real quick.

[He takes one more big sip of the drink, finishing it off, and he deposits it in the trash can as he comes back around the counter. Returning to his booth, he grabs his abandoned briefcase and sighs as he turns to follow her out.]

Maybe someday you'll be done rescuing me from sticky situations.

[She grabs anything she's brought in while the officers gather up the still hallucinating troublemakers and she waits for him to catch up before she walks him out to her car.]

You saved me today, didn't you?

I did. That makes the score in the area of 1-20.

[He sounds amused, though, moreso than he sounds annoyed or irritated about it.]

1-5. Six at most. Don't praise me too much.

[She unlocks the car from a distance, glancing over. Here comes forensics.]

At least no one was killed.

I would have physically intervened if things went that far. I wouldn't let something like that happen before my eyes. [He follows her to the car, sighing mildly.]

I know. I just meant that I'm glad this wasn't a shooting or something worse, especially with a small group using narcotics or hallucinogens.

[She opens her door and slides in, starting the car and letting it warm up.]

Hm. Don't even think about things like that. [They might come true. The idea of being so helpless but to watch a situation like that... talk about a nightmare scenario.

He gets in on the passenger side.]

Drugs. One thing I've never been able to stomach.

I think it's been drilled into me over the past year.

[She sighs, leaning her head back against the seat. She glances over at him.]

And yet you kept drinking your coffee.

My whole career revolves around crime and punishment. Doesn't mean I like to see it happen any more than the next person.

[Dude. Low blow. He glances back at her, frowning a bit.]

Hey. That doesn't count.

It's true, though.

[She puts the car into drive and heads out of the parking lot.]

And I know you don't want to see it happen. No one does. No one except the criminal themselves...most times.

No it isn't. Everyone assumes I drink coffee for the caffeine. [And rightfully so. That's why everyone drinks coffee, isn't it?]
