[Diego is sitting calmly in the corner table near the window at Common Grounds, a classy little coffee house not far from the government offices where he works. There are seven empty cups of coffee on the table and one more full one in his hand ( Read more... )

[Someone looks pretty damn pissed about what's going on in that coffee shop.]

Five minutes and I'll be there. I'll bring an ambulance.

Oh, so I'm not a lady. I see.

[She chuckles quietly as she stands, glancing about the store. The police are finally starting to pull up. She starts counting off how many cups there are.]

I'll have the lab sample all of them and we'll mark them down. The forensic team should be here shortly as well.

[She sighs.]

People just can't keep calm for a moment these days.

If you weren't, I wouldn't have stepped in.

[He seems to be staring at the counter, as though wondering if it would be out of line to order another cup or two to go before he heads out.]

Everything was calm to begin with. Then the two men started to panic about something or another.

Did you catch what they were saying?

Nonsense. One of them started muttering out loud, but it was nothing coherent. His girlfriend tried to calm him down, but soon he was standing up and yelling. The other guy joined him and the fight broke out.

[Diego spots an untouched glass of iced coffee sitting on one of the tables nearby. He picks it up, glances at it, smells it, then takes a sip, casually.]

Hm. Not this one. [Score.]

[She keeps her eyes on her struggling captives and then looks up. She frowns sharply.]

Diego, stop. You're not going to test every single one of these.

You're right. I'm not. [No, he's perfectly content to just drink this one.

Another sip, and he pauses thoughtfully.]

It's less than 20 minutes old. I received my last cup around half an hour ago, and the one before it fifteen minutes before that. That means the drugging happened between those time frames.

[He checks his watch.] Between 4:15 and 4:40.

[Re-l looks surprised at the calculation, but pulls out her NV and quickly jots it down.]

...Whatever was in those cups, it's fast-acting.

I wish I could tell you exactly how fast. [The drug had no effect on him, unfortunately, so he can't really say how long it would have taken.]

If it was in the coffee itself, these would all be tainted. It must have been in the water from the espresso machine.

More than likely.

[She sets her NV down and heads over to it, grabbing a cup. She pours out some water into it and smells it.]

If it is, it's odorless.

[She sets the cup down and eyes it for a moment. And then she dips her finger in it and tastes it.]

And flavorless.

[He shakes his head.]

No, it had a definite bitter taste to it. Enough for me to notice it in the flavor of the coffee. [Probably not enough for a random person to taste, though. Diego could likely tell if you dipped your finger in a cup of coffee.]

I wonder where it came from, then. Or if it was meant to target someone.

[She has no idea. She stares at the cup for a moment, at the water. It's entirely clear. And for a second, she could swear that it looks a little funny.]

Beats me. Did you notice them doing anything? Eating anything with their coffee?

Biscotti or pastries. Typical coffeehouse fare. I can't say I was paying much attention to them until the yelling started.

[He steps behind the counter to have a look around. Typical coffeehouse fare here, too. A few racks of freshly washed coffee cups, the espresso machine, the tins of coffee ready to be scooped into it, a small fridge for the milk and a big sugar bowl with a spoon in it.]

Wouldn't have been the milk or sugar, or else it wouldn't have ended up in mine. Maybe it was a certain blend.

And you, of course, didn't have any of those.

[She glances down at the cups just sitting there, taking them all in. While there's nothing in them, per say, they always could have had something.]

...I'll speak with the barista.

Poor thing was screaming her head off. She tried to break the fight up, but wisely decided to stay back behind the counter when the dishes started flying.

[All the while, he'd been sitting calmly in the corner, trying to enjoy his drink.]

The people near the doors bolted, but the rest of us were more or less stuck.

Poor girl.

[She grabs her NV to mark that down as well.]

Is there anything else you can tell me?
