[ The feed turns on, to a tired looking Ella. She hasn't been paying attention to the NV lately, working on managing a healthy(ish) balance between her two jobs, and ... other things. But despite that, there is a teasing spark in her eyes ( Read more... )

[Grading papers again.]

There is an entire language devoted not only to the fan but to sleeves amongst my culture.

Sleeves? What kind of sleeves? I can't imagine these are very expressive.

[ She holds up an arm, showing the regular sleeve on her blouse. ]

Our traditional sleeves are somewhat fuller than most.

[He holds up his own arm. He's wearing the tradition black kosode of the shinigami. He used his own clothing to drive home a point of samurai culture and literature today.]

There is an entire language devoted to the way a sleeve or a fan is moved, or how it is held.

Ahh, I see what you mean. I knew about the language of fans of course, but the sleeves on the clothing we have back home aren't usually quite that full. With a sleeve like yours though, you hardly need a fan.

Wow. I had no idea a fan could be used for so much.

I've always liked a good fan. They're especially useful in the summer.

I'll bet. Too bad they are only for girls.

Or it could be used to smack the head of someone who's annoying you. [Is that a joke? It might be . . . but this is Hitsugaya. He could be serious.]

[ Whichever it is, Ella giggles at the response. ]

Also a very good use for a fan, yes. Though I expect a lot of people just think they're decorative things. I hear some people use them as weapons too.

[ Pause. ]

Well maybe not this particular kind...

It's common in some places, or used to be, that fans were carried as disguised weapons. Though those ones were specifically made for that purpose.

That kind looks much too fragile for that.

Yeah, no one would suspect someone carrying a dainty little fan to actually have it double as a weapon.

[ She turns it over in her hands thoughtfully. ]

Well it's fairly bendy, and it smarts if you fold it up and smack someone. I suppose it'd be annoying if you poked people with it, but as a weapon?

[ She shrugs with the fan, accidentally letting it slip from her fingers. The fan flies off screen and Ella's gaze tracks it - then her eyes widen and she sort of -cringes- seconds before a smash is heard. ]

Oops.

[So it seemed Ella was feeling a tad silly today, she still looked tired]

Not that I'm not a fan of all that, but I think you missed the important application of the fan as a weapon. Also, you got a sleeping problem or something?

[ She winces a bit at the pun, but doesn't comment beyond a brief smirk. ]

Well, no, I know that there are people who use fans as weapons. In theory anyway - I haven't seen someone actually apply that around here or back at home.

[ She shakes her head at the latter question. ]

Just...ah, a heavy work schedule, that's all.

I've done it myself, useful for a surprise weapon disarm, though the fan isn't much good after that.

[Stratches his head]

So why not, I don't know take a break?

Do you use a weapon like this for it, or something sturdier?

[ A half grin. ]

What do you think I'm doing? This is my break.

Never underestimate the usefulness of a good fan.

[ She pauses to consider. ]

Or a bad one. A bad one can be useful too.
