[ Hattie is staring right into her NV, then takes a number of steps back so she can be seen from the waist up, revealing that she's in a department store of some sort, with Ella by her side carrying a number of shopping bags- 4 to be exact, and she looks almost bored out of her mind in contrast to Hattie's giddy excitement.  There's a bit of ( Read more... )

[ He’s about to ask for advice - not for himself (he’s seen what guys wear nowadays and he’s not sure what the hell is a t-shirt supposed to be but it ain't classy) but Hattie does seem like a good person to ask what a lady friend might like as a present. But something about “everyone will know that you're a big deal and they'll want to be like you” is scary. Even to a hitman. So Hattie's going to get a deer-in-the-headlights look as Claire changes his mind, realises he's already turned the feed on, then makes a quick scramble to recover. ]

-- Nice fan!

[She gives a fluttering laugh, and fans herself with the.. Well. Fan in question. His reaction is all too familiar to her, though.]

Why thank you~, I'm planning to start a collection. I'd better start making room!

[She gives another laugh, and once she settles, gives the man a curious look.]

You look like you have a question. What can I do for you, handsome?

How much space can some fans take up?

[ At least she's cheerful! He takes a second to steel himself then blurts out- ] Could you tell me what'd suit someone even if they weren't actually here? From a description, I mean.

That's a good question, actually.

[Hattie proceeds to count on her fingers, and of course runs out after '5']

Well I would gue- Eep!

[Interrupting second question! She cringes just slightly; but she felt compelled to help the gentleman in some way. Still, it was a challenging request.]

I.. Suppose it wouldn't be impossible. Do you at least have a picture of some sort?

That's a lot of red, all right.

[ Thankfully, she's probably safely in the category of red not being "her color." Clashes with the pink hair, right? Right. ]

So if you were in the mood for red, does that mean you were feeling "emotionally intense"?

Isn't it? It's a good week for it, too.

[She seems surprised by the girl's question.]

Well it isn't exactly like that,it's more of a description of the color. It's more of a coincidence that I was feeling 'emotionally intense' since, really, one could feel that way toward any color.

[She points at the screen.]

Aren't earmuffs out of season currently?

[ Blink blink. ]

Does it matter?

I.. Well.. Normally I would say 'yes', but you seem to pull it off rather well. In fact, you seem to pull it off a little -too- well.

[Hattie peers suspiciously]

What is your tactic? Does it work? Aren't you burning up under those?

[Hattie blinks rapidly in recognition. It was that woman from before, that was briefly wearing armor! She clears her throat, trying not to look too surprised.]

Oh, so we meet again! I'm sorry for exiting so quickly before without even giving my name; I'm Hattie.

And pale, is it? I can't say I'm surprised, but I think light or dark hues could work well.

A pleasure to meet you, Jeanne. Though not just red, perhaps blue as well. I think this is speculation worth exploring, if you find yourself with a bit of free time.

I presume you are in need of a new wardrobe after all, right?

[Her tone is amused, revealing nothing else. Her body language matches ... but someone very good at reading it might pick up suppressed worry and anger. Anyone who knows her well has a pretty good guess how she's feeling.]

You should consider applying for a job as a merchandise scout. It's hard work but you'd love it.

[Hattie is a mixed bag when it comes to reading body language. She isn't picking up anything negative at all this time around. However, she doesn't appear to be very excited about the suggestion. 'Scout' didn't sound very flattering, and hard work? No way!]

O- Oh. You think so? I'm not overly familiar with that line of... labor. What would the job entail?

You run around most days going to all sorts of places which make the sort of items that a store sells; presumably, in your case, clothes and accessories. They show you samples of what they're making at the moment, or what they could make if they had an order for them. You take photographs - video probably here, actually - of everything, even if it looks horrible, you inspect the quality of everything, and you make notes to remember things later.

Then on some days you go into an office, write a report describing everything, give it to the merchandise manager, and answer questions. He or she looks over reports from several merchandise scouts, talks to interior designers, and decides what the store should buy from the wholesalers to put on the shelves.

It would have to be a store which stocked the sort of goods that your tastes run to. Personally, my tastes are quieter, but I've seen stores for the younger set which might be appropriate. [Somebody has to select goods for those stores....]

[Hattie quietly ponders the words; that sounds like an awfully annoying amount of work to her. Worse comes to worse she probably could get 'someone' to transcript for her.

And while she wasn't keen on working under a manager, maybe, just maybe, it could bear fruit. It was time for the dealbreaker question.]

I wasn't aware people were paid for that. Do you think it would make me famous?

I don't think I understand the import.

Import?

[Hattie points to the handbag, looking proud.]

It's made in 'Italy'!

[Hattie's turn to look confused now. This lady was as oblivious as Ella!]

They're more expensive. This is very important stuff to know, sweetheart, write it down somewhere so you don't forget! Keep in mind, though, I got mine at a discount~.
