[The wave comes through revealing a pale looking man, perhaps a little bit paler than should be healthy in fact. Simon is still feeling some lingering effects of being yanked into Siren's Port and hasn't had much time to settle after being rushed from the Darkness outside to the safety of the nearest building. There's a window in the background ( Read more... )

AGI and SERO are deeply mistrusted, and both with good reason. It seems for the most part newcomers such as you and I focus more on solidarity, though the influences of either corporation are rather difficult to avoid entirely.

Have an emergency kit prepared for everything you need to evacuate at a moment's notice. There have been earthquakes and flooding in the recent past, and the darkness is a very real threat.

Aside from that, I can answer some questions, though I have only been here a few months myself.

Thank you. [He sounds quite sincere as this is exactly the sort of answer he was hoping for.] I will certainly do that.

You're the second person to mention that about AGI and SERO... How bad can they truly get, do you know?

Fortunately I do not know first hand. AGI uses people for entertainment, SERO uses them for scientific experiment. In a city where people go missing on a regular basis due to Core fluctuations, darkness monsters and disasters, they have more or less free reign. The government is unsurprisingly useless against them.

[A tight sigh escapes. He might as well have never left home.]

That is unfortunate, if you'll forgive the understatement. The government can't regulate any of this? Or 'won't'?

[ Have a chirpy-sounding girl with pink hair pulled up into pigtails, though her roots are starting to show. ]

The place isn't so bad when you get used to it. [ She's in the Tower Apartments as well, but not a room; it's perhaps vaguely recognizable as one of the lounges in between floors. ] It's better when it isn't dark.

It'd be pretty boring if it wasn't for people having superpowers, I guess.

[Spunky girl what.]

About that. What kind of 'powers', exactly...?

Welllll... [ She wrinkles her nose, as though she's thinking. Getting telepathic powers isn't something she likes talking about. ] Anything you could call "superhuman," I guess?

I'm not really sure how it works for people who didn't have one before, but everyone gets something.

It's just a rather alien concept...'superhuman' abilities belong strictly to the realm of fictional stories where I'm from and now everyone has one? ['Even me?' is the unspoken implication.]

How has this city not torn itself apart by now?

Well, if you can't fight for yourself, I'd really recommend listening when people tell you to stay indoors at night. And even if you can, it's usually better to take a friend.

... Then again, it always is.

Going out in that wasn't high on my list of things to do, don't worry, but thank you for the advice all the same. I'm not much of a combatant anyway...

Then you'll definitely want to stay out of it. Fighting monsters like those ones can take years and years worth of training. Better not to deal with it if you don't have to.

[Have a slightly skeptical look.]

Training that you're still undergoing?

[Reim shows up on the screen with just the faintest smile. It doesn't stay.]

I'm sorry that the Core pulled you away from your home. I'm... afraid it's never easy.

[There's a pause as Reim bows towards the screen.]

I'm Reim Lunettes. I'm afraid I haven't been here too long, but I can offer my assistance, at least.

[He hasn't been getting much sympathy so far, and while he wasn't looking for it, it's still appreciated and it shows on Simon's face as he answers.]

Simon Tam. It's good to meet you, circumstances aside.

Most of the people answering so far have been helpful as well...most of them. But I'm still...confused I suppose about the issue with 'powers'. It sounds silly to me to even say it like that but I'm not sure how else to put it.

Yes, it's nice to meet you as well.

Ah, the powers here can be somewhat confusing. The core will sometimes give people extra powers while they're here at the port. What those powers are will change depending on the person. From what I understand, no two people get the same power.

And everyone gets them. [Seemed to be speaking more to himself just then, but he turns his focus back on Reim quickly.]

Then I suppose that means there's nothing much I can do but wait and see.

Would there be any information you would most care to have?

Right now I'm mostly interested in the core problem and what, if anything, is being done to fix it, and about the...side-effects.

I'm afraid I wouldn't know one way or the other.

[Is disappoint.]

That doesn't bode well. If anyone was making progress I would think it would be more common knowledge.
