[The audio feed is mostly clear, though anyone listening closely would likely hear the faint sound of traffic- Tonegawa’s probably in his office.]

Are you gambling men, Siren’s Port? Poker, dice, roulette… or even the stocks, if you want to stretch it. There’s very little one can do that doesn’t invoke the basic equation of risk and profit, yes, ( Read more... )

How do you jump from cards to mahjong?

It's not that much of a leap, is it? One game for another.

Yeah, but it's not a game you'd expect to leap to. Call me curious.

Ah. I suppose that's cultural. It was a popular choice of game, in my old circles- four player riichi mahjong. What would you suggest?

["The man with nothing to lose"... that description's all too familiar and it brings him right back- sat opposite the other man, shirt sticking to the back of his neck as he tries to take in everything he can about the game they're about to play. His stomach twists a little remembering it.

Of course, Kaiji's pretty sure that Tonegawa's not out to play the same kind of game this time; the situation, and more importantly the pressure, isn't even comparable. So why is it making him feel so uneasy?]

And you say I can't help myself...? [snort] I'm gonna guess that I'm not invited. Whatever, you cheat anyway.

[That voice... he needs another cigarette already. He lights up then sighs again, a rather more genuine sound than its somewhat excessive predecessor. He should have known that Kaiji would have something to say about this.]

This is for pleasure rather than business. And need I remind you that you're hardly above cheating yourself?

For pleasure? [he spits the word more than he says it] Oh, well, good for you. If it's all fun and games then I hope you burn a hole the size of Africa in your pocket, asshole.

And need I remind you that you're the one who started it?

Taking this rather personally, aren't we? Don't be so childish. Or am I not allowed to play with anyone else?

[ This whole world built upon gaming is vast and strange to her, with her habits so focused on the real world and what she believes to be real aims. Were it not for the rumours circulating about this person's business and her newest mission to join that business's affiliation, she would not glimpse into that world at all. ]

I never imagined people could put such value in gaming. Desperation seems like a heavy price for recreation.

[Just text, hmm? Interesting.]

I understand that it's the thrill that draws that sort of person in- not just the thrill of winning, but even the thrill of losing. Life and death on the roll of the dice. [a short laugh] I'm not that sort of player myself, of course.

[ There is a reason for that, but it is rather simple. ]

High stakes are easy to be drawn in by, I suppose. For those who encounter life and death regularly as well as those who do not.

Yours is an objective view, then?

High stakes mean easy solutions to some people. They're usually the ones who forget the way the odds are stacked.

You could say that. I'm more of an observer, personally. It's best not to be too invested in a gamble.

Have you ever played Pai-Sho? That was a favourite game of mine where I am from.

I'll admit, I can't say I have. What sort of game is it?

It is a two person strategy game, from what I have learned similar to Go or Chinese checkers, I believe is what the book had said.

Interesting. I've played Go a few times, though I can't say I'm an expert- would I be hopelessly outmatched in a game?

Very true. But knowing the odds of the dice landing on a four doesn't guarantee that it actually will land on a four. Most people seem to think that that is where the fun is.

There's a certain thrill to leaving things entirely to Lady Luck.
