[The audio feed is mostly clear, though anyone listening closely would likely hear the faint sound of traffic- Tonegawa’s probably in his office.]
Are you gambling men, Siren’s Port? Poker, dice, roulette… or even the stocks, if you want to stretch it. There’s very little one can do that doesn’t invoke the basic equation of risk and profit, yes, but real gambling- now that’s something that takes a certain sort of character. Or characters, I should say.
There’s the reckless man, with little self-control and less common sense, swept along on a tide of adrenalin and perceived invulnerability. Addicts. They burn out fastest, in my experience. Then those who’d like to pretend they had a handle on it, that they could predict the unpredictable by some hopeless conceit that they have any control. The ones that don’t realise that they’re the ones being played, rather than the other way around. And then there’s the desperate man. The man with nothing to lose.
[He breathes out slowly, and then there’s the sound of him leaning forward to stub out his cigarette.]
There are more, of course, but those are the primary figures. So. How many of you would be willing to pit yourself against the odds for the right prize?
[A pause.]
Incidentally, does anyone here play mahjong? It’s been so long since I played a game. [he gives a heartfelt sigh] I’ve somewhat lost my taste for cards, I’m afraid.
