[The video feed starts with a screen of bright blue; one that only shows itself to be something other than a technical error when a wisp of white rare to the sky today peeks into view. The microphone rumbles with the breeze whipping across it. After a moment of this, things seem to calm, and the camera is turned on Kazuhiko's face ( Read more... )

Nana is a person but Nana isn't human. A person doesn't have to be a human to be a person...

Only monsters aren't people.

[A child. One that doesn't exactly look normal. But Kazu isn't much for reactions to things, so there's a small smile on his face for her, barely there.]

You're exactly right, Nana. You don't have to be human to be a person. I'm sure you're as much of a person as everyone else.

What sort of monsters aren't people?

People thought Nana was a monster before...but Nana isn't. Nana is a person!

People who hurt others for no reason and like it.

People can be cold that way. It's very apparent that you're not a monster, Nana, so I wouldn't worry about them.

Those are very scary people, aren't they? There are a lot of them in this city.

Nothing is black and white except the shades themselves, really.

That is very true. That's what makes people interesting.

I agree.

But do you think it would make things easier if the 'black' were more easy to spot?

What manner of "clear cut lines" have you been seeking out, Kazuhiko?

And what's happened to you?

I was hoping that because there are more literal monsters in the Port, that those illusive figurative monsters whom I've heard and read about not just here but in my world as well, would be a little easier to spot.

Given that they actually exist at all. If there could ever be such a thing. [Please say there can't be. A beat of time between the second question and its answer.]

You would be one of the few to believe that I don't actually remember what happened.

Figurative monsters. You mean people who commit monstrous acts? I shouldn't think that impossible to spot.

It happened to Shinji, then?

It's not impossible to spot, but there are times that it's difficult.

He's the only one who would willingly put himself in a gun fight, I would think.

[ First, of course, the relief: ]

Amamiya-san, I'm glad you're doing all right. Ooe-san was pretty worked up.

[ That name, Urick...? No, it's not one which is that uncommon. Maybe it's not the same person... then again, she's seen far too much to believe in coincidence. As to his question... ]

...I have a friend who would say that the line doesn't exist at all.

Katsuragi-san. I'm sorry to have worried you and Ooe-san, and everyone else, so much. I'm fine, I'll be fine.

[It feels strange to have so many people concerned and while the responses are automatic, they're not without a sense of discomfort and awkward.]

Is that what you believe?

Was Mr. Urick... where did he manage to find you, eventually?

[ A pause. ]

Within the limits of what I define as humanity... yes, I do believe that.

A warehouse somewhere, that's the only thing I can remember.

We can only base our opinions on what we know, you don't have to hesitate. [And a deep breath.] Do you think that all people are monsters, or rather that there are no monsters at all.

Ah...it's good to hear you're safe.

[And there's a pause before Naoya chuckles. Oh, isn't this just precious.] There's a problem in that you're conflating 'humanity' with being a person...

But everyone defines their own lines, and whether or not they can change. It's the nature of free will.

Were you also one of the ones called to the search, sir?

[A brow arches.] Humanity and the state of being a person are not confined to someone with specifically homo-sapien DNA, if that's what you mean.

Mm. My name is Naoya.

[And then he...laughs again. Uh-oh.] DNA has nothing to do with it. The problem is 'humanity' generally includes a scope of morality that cannot be applied universally. You can lack it and still be definable as a person.

Naoya-san. I am Kazuhiko Amamiya.

[Automatic response, and on to more important things.] And what scope of morality might that be.
