They're going to turn that baby into a living experiment. They want its mother to die so they can take custody of it and use it as a lab rat.

I thought I got away from all this bullshit.

That's a very heavy assumption.

The best that the mother can do for the protection of herself and her child, now, is to have a strong legal team at hand to manage her rights in this case against SERO's stake in her child.

But she refused the recommendations of Skye's doctors, so at this point it's out of our hospital's hands.

You think the law has any say in this? How sweet. Once that kid can breathe on its own, the mother is useless to SERO. They'll terminate her and play it off as an unfortunate twist of fate.

Publicity only becomes more potent over time, Dr. Yumeno. [It wasn't the easiest thing to manage PR for the Trancy household. Lord Trancy had many less than savory rumors about him (and they were all true), while Alois' background story in general generated numerous conspiracy theories.] It's my experience that men will sooner think you're playing a shell game with the mother. Imagined fraudulence.

It's nonsense. I'd like to invite any of these reporters slip on gloves and take a look on the ultrasound and see for themselves how dangerous the situation is, for the mother's health.

They will not understand unless it is their child.

[Honestly, Claude is kind of wondering what a half-Darkness abomination would taste like. Its soul must be incredibly schizophrenic.]

Maternal attachment is not something I'm so familiar with working with.

How valuable do you think they find babies, anyway?

Everyone who's dealing with this baby... thing. You know, the mum who got knapped in the Dark. How much of it's concern, and how much of it's their job?

For the doctors involved, it is their job, and therefore there is concern for the patient, both mother and child. Unfortunately, it looks as though it may have to come down to the survival of one or the other.

I didn't know they could save babies delivered really early.

Some can. The longer the natural gestation period the better their chances, but nowadays it's very possible once they've made it to week 25. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit specializes in keeping premature infants alive, working to prevent mortality from common respiratory problems and unfinished organ development.

They can keep them alive long enough that the organs develop all the way?

That's right. Through constant monitoring, and medical intervention.

Quite the difficult business. I'm lucky my involvement is only secondhand, through the NICU med students.

Well- it serves as fair warning not to copulate with your partner before checking to see if they're tainted with darkness decay.
