"Hullo," he replies, giving her a small wave and a cheerful grin. She looks terrified, but that'll soon change; heaven only knows he doesn't mean her any harm. Carefully, without any quick movements, he sits on the sand, long legs curled beneath him. "My name is Merlin. What's yours?"

There's a hint of hesitation as she drew away from the rock, sinking back in the water. A moment later she was closer to the shore but still very much in the shallow water, fingers digging in the sand as the water washed over her back gently, rhythmically. It was calming.
"Syrena." She tilted her head to the side for a moment, to consider him.

He can't help but studying her a little, fascinated by what he sees. A silvery tail, scales, a fin-- really, it's quite like a fish, except Merlin can't quite reconcile the ungainly idea of a fish to this graceful creature. Tentatively he scoots forward a little.
It's a pretty thing, her tail is - a silvery gold that shimmers under the water as she rests quietly near the man before her. There's something rather nonthreatening about him, but she can't exactly place it as she studies him. Perhaps it's his eyes.
He hesitates, pausing in the sand. He wants to get closer-- close enough they can actually talk instead of him calling to her from a good ten feet away-- but god forbid he scares her off. He can't precisely follow her, and who knows when next she'd appear? Though if she's a Newcomer, at least he can contact her using his NV.
Eventually, he rises, his hands held out once more in a gesture of peace. "May I come closer?" he asks hopefully.
There's a moment of hesitation, of contemplation before she nods. There's nothing dangerous about this man, especially if he's going to such lengths to appear peaceful and, well, if the tides changed?
A bright grin appears on his face and he scrambles over, sitting on the tide's edge, heedless of the water covering him. It's a bit cold, especially in November, but what does that matter in face of a mermaid? Crossing his legs under him, he grins a bit sheepishly at her.
"Sorry," he says, aware he's acting a bit too excited. "I've just never met anyone like you before."
Excitement is one of the better responses to be greeted with, rather than a greedy smile, laughter, or Calypso forbid another bullet to the tail. "It is alright." She let her fingers dig into the sand. It was a soothing gesture.
