Who; Garrus, Jane Shepard, Mordin
What; Hunting trip! And maybe some awkard.
When; Covering a couple of days, starting from tonight.
Where; Random Jungle Zone (i.e. Garden Zone 08)
Warnings; None.

It was actually a relief to be walking somewhere for once instead of using the teleporters. Sure, they could've ended up smack dab in the middle of the zone, ( Read more... )

Shepard marched behind him and shifted, adjusting the way her pack fell on her back again. It was overly heavy for a trip like this, but half the weight was heat-sinks and that suited her just fine. She was clad in her civvies, but she still wore the boots from her armor instead of the more standard, leather pair she'd picked up. Trekking through swaps and jungle was a little less worrisome with airtight foot-gear.

"Agreed," Shepard responded and picked up the pace. "The wind is blowing...south, I suppose." However one denoted south while on a space-station. "Let's see if we can't find high ground and a wind-break."

They weren't stalking anything yet, so downwind was really a relative and ridiculous concept, but she'd prefar not to become the stalked just yet, if they could avoid it.

Mordin had his own pack, lighter than his fellows. It had medical gear, necessary camping supplies, and so forth. Honestly he wasn't along for the hunting. He'd come in case one of them somehow managed to seriously injure themselves. And for that matter, there was a plant in this zone he wanted to test for certain medicinal properties. Besides, it was good to spend some quality time with the commander and Garrus. Hopefully he wasn't getting in the way of anything though. He'd have to find a discrete moment to ask one of them.

"Finding shelter advisable," he commented, glancing further down the rough trail they were following.

"Visibility under the canopy not good. Believe a better view would benefit us."

Garrus tilted his head slightly. The ever-present visor confirmed what Shepard had just said - the wind was blowing south. He glanced off into the undergrowth absently, fingers drumming against the strap of his pack. "From what I remember, there should be a ridge a few kilometers from here. Might be worth checking out."

He glanced southward. "The only problem is that it's mostly jungle. Might be able to find a few game trails along the way, though..."

"That sounds like a vote in favor," Shepard commented and pulled the machete she'd purchased from her pack. "Kill two birds with one stone."

"That way?" Shepard asked and motioned into the brush with the blade.

There were a few things a space station just couldn't emulate properly. Dawn was one of them. Still, as Shepard crouched in the grass and watched the water over the barrel of her pistol, she couldn't help but think in terms of how long until the sun rose. She had to remind herself, in the simulated half-light that was supposed to pass as predawn, that the clock ran on exact intervals. Thirty minutes till day officially began.

It really didn't matter. The animals that congregated upwind were hardly aware of the discrepancy between an actual dawn and this simulated one. As they gathered around the water, Shepard watched and waited.

The primates around the edge of the gully weren't particularly good targets. The various pachyderm prints were encouraging but shooting the broad side of an elephant wasn't exactly a challenge. Then there were the various birds, but they were just that. Birds. They needed a prey with more bite. Literally.

Garrus was meter or two behind Shepard, eyes carefully scanning the watering hole. Even with the clearing, the trees still grew close together and the underbrush was thick. Seeing anything come from a distance wasn't going to happen. He hefted his rifle carefully, slowly, being careful not to move too quickly.

Hopefully, some sort of predator would decide to make its move before too long. But he was prepared to wait all day if he had to. He'd done it before, both in hunting for sport and hunting for rather more different reasons. So far it was wall birds and herbivores, though. No challenge in that.

Meanwhile, Mordin was himself a bit further behind Garrus, keeping an eye on the jungle behind them. It simply wouldn't do to have something deadly and fangy sneak up on them, after all. He shifted his weight slightly. Hunting wasn't really his scene, but that plant was promising, and hopefully they would get to that sooner rather than later.
