How can the Chinese not have a word for yes? What do they say when they're asked a question about whether or not they assent to something?

"I affirm that" or something similar. Basically, you use the positive or negative form of the word.
"Ni you yidianr lei?" (Are you tired?)
"Wo you yidianr lei." (I am tired.)
"Shimisu Xiansheng shi Zhongguoren ma?" (Is Mr. Smith Chinese?)
"Ta bu-shi. Shi Meigguoren." (He is not. He is American.)
