I was there at the dawning of the computer age, when the Apple first came into existence and very few homes in the world had "personal computers". We always had an Apple computer in our house, it's what I know, what AI like, what I use for all my creative wowy-ness, and I'm stickin' with it.
The power cord you can probably get at RS for $15-$20, I can take a look this weekend (time permitting). As for cameras, it depends on what you want it for. Are you looking for a party/event camera? That Canon A550 is a good one for $150 (when you add in the needed accessories, probably close to $220). If you're talking higher-end professional type, yeah, $700 for a Rebel XT to start

mmmm, i have a two-month-old MacBook Pro. it's my baby. totally worth the $2500 and then some I spent on it. that right there was the biggest check i've ever written in my entire life. I couldn't wait for Leopard to come out, that's going to be released in October or so I believe. Something like that. Buying a new laptop in a few months would kill two birds with one stone, you'd get the most up to date operating system AND a shiny new computer. Score.
