Yay, lots of used books.

One of the local used bookstores is closing (boo!) so it's having a 40% off sale (yay!). And you know what this means: used books.

I actually ended up getting books I've mostly already read but did not, for some reason, actually own. Such as The Left Hand of Darkness. And Mercedes Lackey's Firebird. And some MZB book I haven't read, and volume 2 ( Read more... )

books, books: science fiction, acquisitions, books: fantasy

They're pretty good. They're very clearly set in the '80s -- a lot of the computer stuff hasn't aged well -- and they're not, like, great literature or anything, but they're very fun fantasy-romance-y reads. The heroine is a computer programmer who is very believably smart, strong, and independent. I like her. The hero is a dorky middle-aged wizard who may possibly be insane. I don't think I've read another character quite like him. Together, they have to save both their worlds, blah blah blah. I mean, it's midlist fantasy (I *like* midlist SF an embarrassing amount), but it's really good for what it is.

I would recommend the first two more than the others; the third one is good, but not as good, and the fourth doesn't have Antryg or Joanna in it. If you like used bookstores, you can probably find Darkmage, which is an omnibus of the first two books. And if you decide you like the first one, you will definitely want to read the second one immediately, because the ending of The Silent Tower is a great big cliffhanger.

I accept that - I mean, scifi always ages a bit strangely, and it doesn't generally bother me - usually I find it really interesting to compare people's ideas and predictions with modern reality.

I also am perfectly content with pure enjoyment when it comes to reading! I like to read stimulating stuff and even some nonfiction, but I adore pure FUN too and I'm the same way with TV and movies. There are many forms of enjoyment and entertainment, I think. My favourite author hasn't written a single piece of 'great lit' - Christopher Pike, that is. And lately I've been really into fantasy. I always adore strong female characters, so these sound right up my alley. I trust your taste, they have good reviews, are probably fast reads - all good stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. :)
