Nu!Trek Starfleet isn't supposed to be a military organization? I suspect some Orwellian word-trickery here. "Oh, of course we're not a military organization! We just...blow things up all the time. In the course of our non-military peaceful pursuits. Which we pursue while armed to the teeth, like you do."
I mean, I guess they were armed in TOS too, but somehow it's easier to buy TOS Starfleet as mostly-non-military. Possibly because they sometimes talk their way through problems.
Have you heard the talk about the new Star Trek series? Bryan Fuller is the showrunner, so I feel cautiously optimistic that the characters might occasionally manage to talk about things like adults rather than shooting all the time.
They keep saying it isn't supposed to be a military organization. I guess they think if they say it that will make it be true. Because there are an awful lot of explosions. I mean, they don't solve a single problem by making an earnest speech about the value of all life and/or embracing our diversity and/or not discriminating against people because they have green skin or, you know, whatever all those speeches are about. I'm not saying it's the most subtle thing ever but I feel like the non-military thing is easier to buy the more conflicts you resolve with big corny speeches and not shooting people.
I occasionally see news about the new Trek series. It seems like it will be difficult to legally watch, though, because it's on CBS' exclusive streaming service. But I am all for a talkier Trek.

I'm happy that Sulu is gay -- I just think that George Takei had a point (albeit not articulated well) about why he wanted a new character to be gay.

I get why he wanted it to be a new character but at the same time I'm happy it's a character I'm already invested in.
