Because, as you know the ENTIRE world is doing nothing but watching Westminster for the next four weeks. It was bang out of order for that volcano to ignore the memo and go and errupt without permission.

There will be stern words with Iceland! :)

What's worse, another volcano erupted on Iceland a couple years ago now and melted a glacier! It was barely mentioned here in the US and then only in places that generally report only scientific news.
Now can you imagine what effect all the melted fresh water had on the North Atlantic Conveyer? If anything could bring it to a roaring halt, that would be it and yet not a single American scientist said word one about it.

Ah, but the North Atlantic current switching off would halt global warming in its tracks. Northern Europe would go into another ice age almost overnight... Well, not quite, we are not seriously considering the "Day after tomorrow" scenario here, it would take a few years for the effects to be felt, but only a few. That's "overnight" in geological terms!

This volcano hasn't erupted in over 200 years, and the last time it did the eruption lasted for 16 months. That kind of puts the BA cabin crew's demands into perspective!

They finally started showing film footage of the eruption on the weather channel last night. It now turns out that the volcano was in the middle of a glacier which it's melting. Naturally all the run-off is going into the Atlantic ocean where, yes, it's going to slow the Atlantic current way down.
I wonder if it produced ash and smoke for the entire length of its last eruption?
:]

I only found out about it minutes ago. The two people on my friends page ahead of you both mentioned it. One of them is a travel agent so it's making her job a little difficult. The other was planning to go to the next F1 race.
