Nicfe picture, I haven't seen this particular one, but one like it. I have it on my blog http://fube.ca/2008/03/re_knut_the_polar_bear.html. I read that animal rights activists are in a huff about Knut, anyone know why?

I don't know of any recent wanking about Knut. I just know the same thing you described in your blog when he was born. That some people were kinda "thinking out loud" whether it wouldn't be more natural to put the bear down instead of raising him by humans.
However, two new polar bears have been born to German zoos recently. In Nuremberg it's Flocke and recently they discovered another one in Stuttgart. There was some moderate wankage about Flocke as the zoo resisted intervening at first but then the mother bear seemed to be mistreating her and the pressure from the public increased until the zoo stepped in. Maybe this is what you're refering to?

I actually hadn't heard about the other two polar bear cubs, I was just curious about Knut. It sounds like there was less controversy about him than I had been led to believe. Thanks for the reply!

I never really perceived it as a "huge controversy". The way I experienced it was that some random idiot somewhere made a throw-away comment that was met with the appropriate ridicule and waving of hands by most people. Then the world press quite randomly poured in, Anderson Cooper ran a report on Knut, he landed on the cover of Vanity Fair together with Leonardo DiCaprio and Knut became an instant hit.
I'd say if you're looking for polar bear controversy, Flocke was a much bigger one. The Nuremberg Zoo was put off by the hype Berlin had experienced so they really didn't want to poke it with a 10-foot pole. Then one of the two mothers killed and ate both cubs. Then some idiots from the press hassled the other mother and upset her which caused her to drag Flocke outside and drop her on the hard floor repeatedly. The press caused a huge hype and demanded intervention and so it happened and now they've got Knut 2.0 in the making, complete with an international naming contest and what not.
