I do not understand how that decision cannot be extended to a generalized, "it's ok to discriminate against any group for any reason, if enough people vote to do that". Who would want to live in California with that kind of constitution?

That is one of the points that's come up in the commentary. I guess the fact that discrimination has to be implemented piecemeal by narrowly-defined rights is supposed to be a deterrent? I really do need to read the ruling.

The only good part is that something as simple as a new Proposition can be used to eliminate Prop 8 in the next election. But "do we or do we not have rights?" may be a ballot question like ping-pong for the next 30 years. :-/
