The Nature of the Name

I can't help my feeling of snobbery when the issue of names comes up. After all, not only was I blessed (in my opinion) with a relatively unique name with an awesome history, but I actually bend the standard rules by having a hyphenated FIRST name (that's right, first, not last--booyah). Nuthin'. In fact, what's wrong with playing a DS? What's wrong with listening to an iPod? What's wrong with wearing Nike shoes? What's wrong with texting your friends?

Nuthin'.

You have to combine all of the things to create the right kind of spoiled, over-indulged kid with attitude problems, most likely arising from the fact that they learned that their mom named them after characters in a book that not only are incredibly lame, but will later be thought of as prime comedy material to make fun of the 2010s.

Yeah, I've traveled a LOT, and I pay close attention, so I've encountered about 20 "Athena"s over time. I even had one other Athena at my high school and ONCE we were both in a Spanish class together. I never actually spoke to her--aside from our shared name, we had nothing else in common. I've found that in general, most people named "Athena" are actually Asian of some variety. I've found that same precept to be true in people younger than 30 who are named "Esther" as well. I've run into about 15 "Esther"s, all young Asians. Ah well ( ... )
